Friendly competition: Kent Co. find out who can donate more school supplies.

Comstock Park and Kenova Hills will be judging who has more school spirit by seeing who can raise the most donations in the Fill the Bus contest.

KENT COUNTY, Michigan. – It’s a busy season for Diane Schweiger. The Kenova Hills Public Schools Transportation Director is working overtime to make sure the county bus drivers are ready for the new school year.

But when Mikaellita Fortier, her colleague at nearby Comstock Park Public School, reached out to him, Schweiger realized she needed one more thing to add to her plate.

“I got a call from the director of transportation at Comstock Park, he wanted to know if we would like to have a little friendly competition. Well, that intrigued me, ”Schweiger said.

It has been suggested that a ‘Fill the Bus’ contest be held to see if the Comstock Panthers or the Kenova Hills Knights can donate more school supplies so that children in the counties start the year off on the right track.

“What we collect will go to our district, and what they collect will go to their district, and we’re going to count it at the end and see which district wins. It’s all fun, ”Schweiger said.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made the past year and a half difficult for students around the world, and district leaders hope this competition will create additional incentive to help students return to class.

“Many children did not have the opportunity to attend school last year. They are happy to be back in the buildings, ”Schweiger said.

“Some parents have lost their jobs. Maybe they need a little extra help with school supplies. It will help everyone. “

Schweiger, who has worked at Kenowa Hills for 21 years, says one of the things she loves about the area is that people always come to each other, and she believes the same can be said for the Comstock community. The park.

“This is definitely a family. Many people who left for Kenova Hills still live in the area, and their children and grandchildren now live in Kenova Hills, ”she said.
