Game Developers Conference Report: Majority of Developers Disapprove of Blockchain Games

Editor’s Note: To be honest, most non-fungible token (NFT) transactions and ideas seem to me to be fraudulent. Many people do not fully understand what NFTs are and how they work and shell out ridiculous sums of money for something that does not actually exist and is often unlikely to appreciate in value.

It seems that a large majority of game developers are also against NFTs and their use as a monetization method in video games. According to the Game Developers Conference 2022 annual report, 70% of developers surveyed said their studios had no interest in implementing NFTs or cryptocurrencies in their titles.

This statistic is perhaps not damning in and of itself. However, the comments left by some of the respondents are more revealing. Most raised concerns about the environmental impact of implementing NFTs and cryptocurrencies in games. Others believe that NFTs, in particular, open the floodgates to shovelware rogue applications.

“I’d rather not endorse burning down a rainforest to confirm someone ‘owns’ a jpeg,” said an anonymous developer.

“I don’t understand how this hasn’t been identified as a pyramid scheme,” said another, referring to the current trend of NFT exchanges.

Some people are willing to quit their jobs if their studios start selling NFTs in-game.

“Burn them to the ground. Ban everyone involved,” said an NFT worker vehemently against the idea. “I am currently working at an NFT company and I am resigning to get away from it. »

The handful of developers who said they preferred blockchain games seemed to think that non-fungible tokens in games were inevitable.

“It’s the wave of the future,” replied an enthusiastic developer.

It’s not clear that NFTs will ever really be a thing in gaming. Ubisoft tried to bring NFT cosmetic items to Ghost Recon, but players don’t buy them. Stalker developer GSC Game World announced plans to incorporate NFT into the upcoming sequel, but quickly backed down after fan backlash.

Developers aren’t the only ones in the industry bucking the current trend. Valve has instituted a ban against all blockchain games on Steam. This restriction would include securities that implement a cryptocurrency or NFT economy.
