Gaming in the Cloud: GeForce NOW Coming to LG TVs

LG has announced a partnership with Nvidia to be the first smart TV maker to host the GeForce NOW streaming game service. The webOS app will be available in beta in the coming days on a selection of 4K TVs (OLED, QNED Mini LED and NanoCell) in 80 countries. It will be a new platform for GeForce NOW, after Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, Android, and Safari (for iOS and iPadOS).

Play PC games on your TV, without a PC

Games streamed through the online service will be able to display up to 60 FPS, but at a maximum of 1080p. 4K remains a privilege for Shield TV, Nvidia’s box. All three subscription plans will be available in the webOS application: free but with a queuing system, Priority (€ 49.99 / 6 months) for 1080p / 60 FPS, RTX 3080 (€ 99.99 / 6 months) for graphics of high quality.

Unlike Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming service, which is presented as a “Netflix of video games” with hundreds of titles that can be played immediately, GeForce NOW offers the streaming of games that we have bought, for example, on Steam. Guardians of the Galaxy, Crysis Remastered Trilogy or Rocket League and Destiny 2 are supported. It is still possible to try 35 free games.

Of course, you also need a good internet connection: at least 15 Mbps for 720p / 60 FPS, or 25 Mbps / 60 FPS. Latency should also be less than 80ms, but Nvidia recommends less than 40ms for the best experience. The quality of the Wi-Fi connections of LG TVs was what it is (this is also the case with Samsung and others), the manufacturer recommends an Ethernet connection.
