GeForce Now Fixes MacBook Pro Gaming Weakness

The specs of Apple’s new MacBook Pro are something to dream about. Its M1 Max processor has GPU performance four times faster than the M1. Its memory bandwidth is twice that of the M1 Pro and six times that of the M1. Additionally, the M1 Max has 3.5 times more transistors and four times more unified memory than the M1.

According to Apple, the M1 Max’s GPU performance is more than 2.5 times that of a compact business laptop when running on battery power, and more than 3.3 times that of a high-end laptop. Machine learning models are on average three times faster on new chips than Apple’s fastest Core i9-based MacBook Pro, with some models even 20 times faster!

Bottom line: The M1 Pro, and more specifically the M1 Max, which powers Apple’s new MacBook Pros, is much faster than anything Apple has released so far. The US giant’s new internal processors promise not only to accelerate today’s demanding processes, but also to enable new software capabilities, all with revolutionary energy efficiency. However, they don’t come close to what PCs can achieve in today’s market, especially when it comes to gaming.

While PC makers have acknowledged the growing convergence between work and gaming PCs and toned down the extreme aesthetics of some gaming laptops in the past year, they are still segmenting their portfolios accordingly. HP’s fastest laptops can be found in its line of Z workstations and in its line of Omen games. Lenovo’s P-Series Mobile Workstations aren’t intended for the same buyers as their Legion laptops. As for Dell Precision workstations, they will never be confused with your Alienware brand laptops.

A computer limited by the Apple ecosystem

Unfortunately, while the new MacBook Pros seem capable of handling the most demanding Triple-A gaming titles, the Mac simply lacks the bulk to appeal to them, especially as Microsoft over the years has beefed up the case for crossover Windows and Xbox. However, all is not lost for those who wish to venture far beyond the world of Apple Arcade.

Thanks in particular to game streaming services like Xbox Game Pass and GeForce Now, which have continued to grow by attracting, for example, new titles. Nvidia has announced the next generation of GeForce Now, with its own performance story to tell. The update is powered by Nvidia’s Superpod and features nearly 9,000 CPU cores and nearly 11.5 million CUDA cores. The service can reach more than 39,000 teraflops, which, according to Nvidia, makes it the most powerful gaming supercomputer ever built.

According to Nvidia, the Superpod enables GeForce Now to create the gaming experience of its high-end RTX 3080 GPUs, delivering three times the processing power of the Xbox Series X and allowing games to be played in resolution. 1440p at 120 frames per second. Therefore, the improved screen refresh rate of the MacBook Pro gives you a certain advantage, even during streaming. Regardless, the performance is said to be 70 times the gaming performance of an average Steam laptop and 13 times the performance of the integrated graphics cards of the M1-based MacBook Air.

Nvidia to the rescue

But Nvidia’s biggest win lies in its Adaptive Sync technology, which enables the company to achieve latency as low as 56ms for an experience it says is the most comparable to local gaming.

Access to the RTX 3080 experience, with its higher resolution and refresh rate, costs $ 99 when purchased for a six-month period. But for new MacBook Pro users saving for that third Pro XDR display, the company has created a new priority price of $ 49 for the same duration, offering games in 1080p at 60fps. The service also maintains a limited free tier.

Game streaming services are often positioned to enable low-cost, low-performance devices such as integrated graphics PCs and Chromebooks to deliver cutting-edge games as played on a cutting-edge PC. This includes the first M1-based Macs, as well as the huge installed base of Intel-based Macs. The new MacBook Pro, however, makes it a rare but excellent candidate for such services. What will the PC gaming market open to you?
