George R.R. Martin is a House of the Dragon fan, but will you be?

House of the Dragon, the first Game of Thrones spin-off to hit the series, has a bumpy ride ahead of the original show’s gruesome ending. But the show received the endorsement of author George R.R. Martin.

Speaking on the House of the Dragon panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Martin confirmed that he had seen nine episodes of the show’s first season. From the looks of it, the show is “pretty amazing” and that the writer is “really really happy” with what he’s seen so far.

Martin wrote the books that Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are based on, so his opinion carries a lot of weight. However, House of the Dragon is based on the book Fire and Blood, which spans several decades and is written more like a history textbook than a real novel. This complicates the adaptation process a bit.

There is no way to copy scenes verbatim, as was the case with Game of Thrones in its early days. Martin’s positive response suggests that the showrunners have done a pretty good job of filling in the gaps.

“These books are like my children, but when you give them up for adoption, you get nervous about what they will become,” Martin said. “But I am very, very lucky here. Martin also added that show creator Ryan J. Condal “did a great job adapting the books and our cast is amazing.”

Martin also confirmed that he will not be making a cameo appearance in the first season of House of the Dragon. Like his cut cameo in Game of Thrones, the scene with Martin was in the pilot episode and ended up being cut after reshoots. The author suggests that he may have another book somewhere in the future, but only after he finishes his next book.

“You may not know this, but I’m writing a book and it’s a little late. So I won’t play until I finish this book, so maybe if the show is still on,” Martin said.

This does not give us much hope for the fate of The Winds of Winter, which has been in the process of being written since at least 2010. Now it’s gotten to the point where it’s no longer funny. The prospect of another multi-season series ending before the book’s release isn’t exactly going to make fans happy.

This suggests that House of the Dragon will get more than one season and not join the growing list of canceled shows.

The reception for the latest season of Game of Thrones has been a disaster, and in the three years since the show fell out of pop culture. Unlike other poorly received installations in the franchise, Game of Thrones doesn’t even have the advantage of living off memes – like the Star Wars prequels to Spider-Man 3.

As such, “House of the Dragon” should prove itself worthy of both existing and continuing one of the most spectacular crashes and burns that pop culture has seen in years. Luckily, the show’s recent trailers paint a pretty positive picture, and the recently released San Diego Comic-Con trailer doesn’t hold back on either the dragons or the action.

Maybe this show will still be able to conquer people. Let’s hope it doesn’t take Martin another eight seasons to finish his damn book.

The first episode of House of the Dragon will air on HBO and HBO Max on August 21, with subsequent episodes releasing every week.
