God of War Ragnarok: 10 Tips and Tricks You Need to Know to Get Started

God of War: Ragnarok is finally available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5! Several improvements have been made to this sequel to the first opus, released in 2018. To get you off to a good start on your quest, here’s our guide to 10 tips and tricks you need to know to get started in God of War: Ragnarok!

WARNING: Minor spoilers for the first hours of the game in this article

1- Take your time

If you want to play God of War: Ragnarok in a straight line to complete the story as quickly as possible, it’s up to you. But you will miss half of what is to be seen in this Scandinavian world.

Take your time is probably the best advice on this list! If your target is in the area on the left, why not explore the area on the right? The game is designed in such a way that you can take your time and explore it to the fullest. There is a good chance that you will come across either a side quest to collect more experience, or a new Mimir story, a Norn chest or a legendary chest to upgrade Kratos, or simply resources that will allow you to buy better weapons and armor.

Of course, you play as Kratos, and this is the character you will upgrade the most during your adventure, but don’t forget about Atreus! The latter can really come in handy during the fights and it would be a big mistake not to improve it. Therefore, he will be able to distract enemies when the fight rages, and improve his arrows to neutralize and stun the right enemies faster.

When you open the map, you will see a list of objects/objectives that are hidden in each area. Some of these items/goals are required to upgrade Kratos.

For example, Norn Chests, which need to be unlocked with simple puzzles, are the only way to permanently upgrade your health bar and rage bar thanks to Idunn’s Apples and Honey Horns.

Legendary chests will drop equipment to upgrade Kratos, and artifacts can be sold for a good amount when meeting with dwarves.

Part of the adventure will take place on the water in a canoe or sleigh. There is much more to do than just get from point A to point B. There are several important resources that you can collect on your travels.

Garbage and barrels on your way exist not to bypass them, but to demolish them! You can dash into these barrels with your canoes to easily collect money. Also, keep an eye out for highlighted areas in the water, this indicates that you can collect material that will be useful for upgrading your armor or weapons.

A word of advice: just like the first God of War (2018), there are a few drops of Yggdrasil Dew hidden in this Norse world. When harvested, each drop permanently increased one of Kratos’ stats!

In the game, you will quickly notice these strange creatures hiding underground as soon as you get too close to them or try to attack them from a distance. These Tatzelwurms, as the codex says, will give you some resources if you manage to clear them.

What if she hides when she sees you? As Atreus points out during your first encounter with this creature, you must move around it and attack from a distance… from behind! This way she won’t be able to hide and you can easily eliminate her and collect the resources owed to you. A little trick that can pay off!

6- MODE Rage to the rescue

Combat in God of War: Ragnarok isn’t easy and doesn’t always give you a second chance. Whatever difficulty you play on, both the smallest and the biggest enemies in the game will be able to inflict a lot of damage on you if you rush headlong into a bunch without strategy on your part. Feel free to use your shield and dodge to give yourself a chance to defeat your opponents.

If you’re in trouble, Rage Mode will help! Activate it with L3 + R3 when your rage bar finally fills up to make Kratos super powerful and resistant to enemy attacks and give you a little more life. If all that’s not enough, the famous resurrection stones are making a comeback in this sequel.

The environments in God of War: Ragnarok are a little more open and much more vertical, allowing you to easily dodge enemies if you’re in trouble, or just climb up and attack your opponents from above.

But above all, you can interact with many elements of the scenery that will help you in combat. Watch out for exploding red canisters, huge chunks of rock that can be used as projectiles, or wooden beams that can be destroyed with Atreus’ arrow to knock down enemies clinging to them.

From the first hours of the game, God of War: Ragnarok will offer you a choice of equipment with different characteristics. It’s up to you to decide what suits your fighting style best.

Whether you’re good at parrying at the right moment, or you just want a defense that’s more resistant to enemy attacks, the choice is yours. You’ll also be able to determine if you’d rather upgrade Kratos’ power or defense, depending on how you like to play.

If the experience gained from combat or quests allows you to upgrade Kratos and Atreus’ skills, the money will serve as your currency during your encounters with the dwarves Brok and Sindri to upgrade your weapons and armor.

There are several ways to earn money in the game, feel free to explore, often money is lying around. Fights and small chests will also give you money, as will barrels when you are on the water. If you forget to collect your loot after fights, it’s no more serious. The chest next to the dwarven merchants will let you find everything you forgot.

A little trick: one of the best ways to quickly raise money is to sell outdated artifacts (found during your adventure) and your equipment to the dwarves.

Not always well explained in the early hours of the game, but the white bar under your enemies’ life bar is the stun gauge. Upon completion, smaller enemies can be quickly destroyed by execution (R3), while stronger enemies are temporarily immobilized.

How to quickly increase the stun bar? Atreus’ arrows and parry/shield strikes will allow you to increase the stun bar faster than just weapon strikes.
