More than expected by PlayStation players, God of War: Ragnarok has done its job, as evidenced by the launch numbers. However, it won’t be him who will reclaim the crown of the best PS5 title of 2022, or even a silver medal.

Summary

  • End of 2022 rich in video games
  • Third God of War, big 2023 for Sony

End of 2022 rich in video games

As 2023 approaches, and while some approve of what lies ahead, others prefer to look back to take stock. 2022 was rich in games and ended with a very eventful last quarter: from the beginning of October it was Overwatch 2, A Plague’s Tale: Requiem, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Gotham Knights, Warzone 2.0 or even Sonic Frontiers, which may have been available on several consoles such as The Callisto Protocol, Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII: Reunion and Need for Speed: Unbound most recently.

In terms of exclusives, Nintendo, for example, could look to Bayonetta 3, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, and of course Pokémon Scarlet/Purple, hoping to wrap up Dragon Quest Treasures well.

But it’s Sony and its PlayStation that we’re interested in: while it’s had what could be considered an easy year in terms of the number of games released, most of its exclusives have received unanimous reception: Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, The Last of Us: Part 1 of course God of War: Ragnarok. Proof of its success, the latter stands out as the best launch of a PlayStation exclusive.

Numbers that show the enthusiasm of the players for the continuation of the adventures of Kratos and Atreus, who are also supported by the press. On the PlayStation 5, the game has a score of 96/100 on Metacritic: a site that averages all benchmarks of the game streamed online. Surprisingly, that note isn’t enough to win the crown: a long second place behind Elden Ring (which saw it lose its Game of the Year title at the Game Awards), the latest title from the Santa Monica studio even stole second place last week.

Unsurprisingly, it’s The Witcher 3’s next-gen update (available December 14 on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC) that put CD Projekt in second place behind Elden Ring in 2022. Originally released in 2015, The Witcher 3 has since been regarded (along with the Blood & Wine and Heart of Stone DLCs) as one of the best open-world games of its generation. Something that doesn’t seem to have changed in seven years, although this update seems to be only a visual one.

In any case, Sony and PlayStation today may be among those who prioritize what awaits them. We understand, as several PS5 exclusives are planned for next year, including Final Fantasy XVI, Forspoken, and Marvel’s Spider-man 2.
