Google Pixel Fold Reportedly Delayed (Again)

If you’re interested in the Pixel Fold’s status, a new report suggests moving Google’s foldable device rumors from the “on again” column to the “off again” column.

Pixel Fold – also known as Pixel Notepad. (will open in a new tab) in some circles, there have been rumors that it is in development and will be launched later this year. But now the report is in The Elec (will open in a new tab) from South Korea, claims that Google plans to delay the release of its first foldable phone.

Citing “people familiar with the matter,” The Elec says the Pixel Fold isn’t that far off to compete with existing foldable phones. So, this long-rumored device is out of the way again.

If you don’t want to take The Elec at their word, consider this tweet from Ross Young. (will open in a new tab) media supply chain consultants. He also revealed that the launch of Google’s foldable device is being delayed due to supply chain reports. According to Yang, the Pixel Fold is being pushed back to spring 2023.

This is reportedly the second time Google has hidden plans for a foldable phone. There were rumors last year that the Pixel Fold would be coming soon, but in November there were reports that the Fold had been cancelled. Almost immediately after that, new reports claimed that the project was back on track, with Google targeting a launch date of late 2022, possibly around the same time as the Pixel 7.

We know the Pixel 7 is coming – Google told us about it at the Google I/O 2022 conference this month. He also showed off the budget Pixel 6a phone, which will arrive much earlier in July, and the Pixel tablet, which won’t be available until 2023. There was no discussion of foldable phones at I/O, although Google is developing a version of Android optimized for foldable screens, suggesting that the Pixel Fold isn’t as far along as those projects.

Previous rumors about the Pixel Fold have suggested a phone with a lid that pops open to reveal a much larger screen. The Elec reports that the Google foldable smartphone was supposed to have a 7.57-inch main screen and a 5.78-inch outer phone screen. An ultra-thin glass cover will rest on the main display, allowing you to close your phone.

If you’re familiar with the best foldable phones, you’ll understand that this sounds a lot like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, which also features a 7.6-inch internal display. (The Fold’s 6.2-inch display is slightly larger than the Pixel Fold’s supposed.) With Samsung already working on a sequel – the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is expected later this year – Google is already having to play catch-up if it gets its own foldable phone. As a result, you can understand the phone makers’ caution about when to release the Pixel Fold.

Samsung is dominating the foldable phone market right now, although we’ve heard other phone makers are developing competing products like the Motorola Razr 3. At the moment, it looks like Google won’t be among those contenders.
