The BL2C (Cybercrime Brigade) services detained a suspect in the case of the AP-HP data theft, according to the JDD. The 22-year-old man, a computer science student from the Var, was arrested on Wednesday and is believed to be behind the attack that targeted the Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) computer system.
This intrusion was possible thanks to the exploitation of a 0-day flaw in the software marketed by the Hitachi Vantara company. The attack allowed the perpetrators of the intrusion to seize health data related to COVID tests conducted by 1.4 million citizens at AP-HP hospitals. According to the JDD, the suspect detained by the police admitted the facts while in police custody. He reportedly claimed the facts on Twitter and posted a link to the New Zealand hosting platform on jeuxvideo.com that contained a copy of the stolen files.
The suspect justified his action by explaining that he wanted to highlight the security flaws of the computer health system according to France Info. The JDD specifies for its part that the suspect was also an opponent of the health pass.
The regional directorate of the judicial police in Paris has created a complaint form so that victims of this data breach can file a complaint without having to go to a police station or gendarmerie. This was made available to the public through the Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr platform. More than 800 complaints have been registered by this means according to the JDD.
