Hackers Performed $ 110,000 in Remote Mining on Hacked HP Servers

Bottom line: Between December 9 and 17, an HP server data center was the largest contributor to the Raptoreum cryptocurrency blockchain. At its peak, the center’s output exceeded that of all other mining systems combined. A subsequent investigation found that the servers were most likely under the control of hackers during the period, who reportedly made around $ 110,000.

Currently, the company whose servers were hacked has not been released. They are likely among the 100 large IT groups that declared themselves victims of the Log4J virus vulnerability this month, including Amazon, IBM, and Microsoft.

The Log4J vulnerability was discovered in early December to allow remote execution of arbitrary code, even on systems running as a local host without an external connection. Since then, it has been largely fixed, although it continues to infect servers under specific circumstances.

It was the sudden disappearance of the HP server pool on December 17, indicating that the servers had been patched, revealing that they were being used in a non-consensual manner. One of them, however, continued to function; maybe it has not been corrected, or it is saved as a jar of honey.

All this information is visible through the Raptoreum blockchain. Its developers are drawing attention to it to dispel the rumor that Raptoreum is unstable. Raptoreum’s core algorithm, GhostRider, is a proof-of-work and proof-of-stake combination that is intentionally resistant to throttles and other causes of instability.

GhostRider is particularly fond of AMD processors due to its large L3 cache. Raptoreum is surprisingly cost-effective on AMD’s expensive Epyc server processors due to its 256MB cache on models with 32 or more cores. This likely led the hackers to target HP servers, which according to an informal investigation by Raptoreum developers were 9000 series and used Epyc processors.

During the operational period of the HP servers, the address to which they belonged accumulated around 30% of the total reward of the block or 3.4 million RTM. It was worth around $ 110,000 when hackers sold half on CoinEx, but the half that they kept has declined slightly since then.
