By 2026, HBO Max will be present in 190 countries around the world, leaving little doubt about WarnerMedia / Discovery’s true international ambitions. For starters, HBO Max will make its European debut on October 26 in the Nordic countries (Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland) and in Spain and Andorra, or 6 countries. In addition to the already announced markets where HBO is already present, the offering will be available in Estonia, Greece, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Turkey, all markets where HBO has not yet launched the streaming service.
By early 2022, the platform will expand to 14 additional countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Portugal.
45 days between the room and the SVOD
But the big news is the window that HBO Max will launch for its movies: Warner Bros. latest blockbuster movies will be available on HBO Max just 45 days after their theatrical release. It will start this year in the Nordic countries, and from next year in Spain, Portugal, Holland, Greece, Iceland and Central and Eastern Europe.
Less than 9 euros per month
HBO Max has also indicated that the service will be offered at an attractive price, with a new annual subscription that offers 12 months of access for the price of eight, which represents a savings of more than 30% and lowers the monthly cost to about 5, 99. euros in Spain and Finland, countries in which the normal monthly subscription will be 8.99 euros. In Sweden, HBO Max will cost around 8.80 euros.
The advantage of the programs
In announcing the European launch, WarnerMedia executives took the opportunity to highlight what one of the platform’s strengths will be against its direct competitors.
“HBO Max is coming to Europe, bringing with it the best movies and television shows from 100 years of Warner Bros. with HBO, Max Originals, DC and Cartoon Network,” said Johannes Larcher, head of HBO Max International. For her part, Christina Sulebakk, CEO of HBO EMEA added: “We have entertained fans in Europe since the launch of our first HBO TV channel in Hungary in 1991 and we have been present on the continent for more than a decade with our HBO brand transmission services. HBO Max represents the arrival of a new service that will take a new step forward, offering an improved viewing experience and a much wider range of content, with the best entertainment for the whole family, at a very attractive price. We are excited to bring HBO Max to Europe for fans and customers to enjoy. “
What about France then?
Unsurprisingly, HBO Max officials have not made any announcements for France. Not very surprising, since the OCS deal isn’t finished, it should end in 2023, and that announcing SVOD releases 45 days after the theater doesn’t really fit the logic of the upcoming tricolor media timeline. France is not alone in this case, since HBO has an agreement with the Sky group until 2025 in three other European countries: the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy.
To paraphrase James Bond: “HBO Max can wait.”
