HBO Max Batgirl Movie Canceled

ComicCon 2022 has come and gone without any mention of Batgirl, Warner Bros. a film that was filmed in the winter and is apparently due for release in 2023. Well, today we learn that despite the fact that Warner Bros. and DC Films chose not to release the film on any platform or in theaters.

Discovery CEO David Zaslav and the new Warner Bros. head Michael De Luca aims to cut costs and focus on films made for theaters rather than direct broadcast. One source says that after poor test audience reviews, Warner Bros. thought the film “would be irreparable”.

DC Films President Walter Hamada outlined the strategy in early 2020. The idea was to take over the Disney Marvel Cinematic Universe with two of its own: the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and the DC Films Multiverse. They will release up to four films in theaters each year, with another one or two exclusive to HBO Max. However, the COVID19 pandemic hit shortly after and those plans were thwarted.

When HBO Max launched, one of the biggest offerings was DC movies, including a director’s cut of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It’s not a huge deal lately.
