Health Canada Approves Johnson & Johnson Vaccine for Adults

Health Canada has approved the single-dose COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Johnson & Johnson for use in people 18 years of age and older.

The decision is posted on Health Canada’s website and confirmed in a press release issued Wednesday by pharmaceutical group Janssen, makers of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

The company explains that the decision to approve the viral vector-based vaccine is based in part on initial scientific data that showed it to be 85% effective in preventing progression to a severe form of the disease and protecting against hospitalizations. and deaths caused. for COVID-19, 28 days after vaccination.

Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose COVID-19 vaccine can be stored and distributed through regular channels. The manufacturer estimates that it remains stable for two years when stored at temperatures between -25 ° C and -15 ° C, and up to six months under normal refrigeration conditions, that is, at temperatures between 2 ° C and 8 ° C.

Mathai Mammen, global director of research and development at Janssen, argues that a vaccine that prevents severe forms of the disease and protects against hospitalizations and death from COVID-19 will ease pressure on healthcare systems.

No expected delivery

This vaccine is manufactured at Emergent BioSolutions in Baltimore, Maryland. However, at the moment the delivery of doses in the country would not be scheduled.

Last summer, Canada rejected hundreds of thousands of doses of the vaccine manufactured at the US plant Health Canada only approved the European-manufactured doses of the vaccine marketed under the Janssen name.

But after an on-site inspection of the Emerging BioSolutions facility in Baltimore, Health Canada and its partners, the European Medicines Agency and the South African regulatory authority concluded that “the facility complies with good manufacturing practices.”

This means that the Janssen vaccine can be imported into Canada and used to inoculate Canadians.

“No further shipments of the Janssen vaccine are expected at this time, but the Government of Canada continues to work with its provincial and territorial partners to assess the need for additional doses of this vaccine,” he said. of a press release.

Janssen reports that Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine leverages technology that has also been used to develop and manufacture Janssen’s Ebola vaccine scheme, as well as to design its experimental vaccines against Zika virus, the respiratory virus. syncytial (RSV) and HIV.
