Network Address Translation (NAT) is a big part of connectivity for online multiplayer games, as it decides how incoming traffic is handled. For gamers, your NAT type can play a huge role in who you can play with, setting up barriers if not configured correctly. There are many reasons why strict or even double NAT types appear on your network, but with the help of port forwarding, you can easily overcome the obstacles. This is not the only method; For many people, it will be enough to make sure that Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) enabled on your router is sufficient. Here’s how to change the NAT type on PlayStation 4 to play online.
How to forward the port of your PlayStation 4
The ports you need to open for your PlayStation to get open NAT are the same, but the actual process may differ from router to router. The steps are constant, but you may need to dig into your router settings to find what you need.
Open the Settings app on your PlayStation 4.
Then scroll down and select Network.
Select Show connection status.
Android Central Make a note of the IP address of your console. This will be necessary later in the port forwarding process. Make a note of the Mac address of your console. This may also be necessary for later steps.
Log into your router’s control settings. A good place to start if you’ve never done it before is to check your router, as many may have the information on a label. Manually assign a static IP address to your PS4 console, using the details from step four and potentially step five, depending on your router. On Google WiFi, for example, you will find it in the Advanced Networks section of the companion app. Find the port forwarding rules for your router. Again, using Google WiFi as an example, you will also find this under Advanced Networks.
Add rules for TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480 and UDP 3478, 3479. For more information, see the Sony Network Guide.
Now restart everything to make sure everything started correctly and you should see an improvement in your NAT type.
Follow the first three steps above to check. There are three types of NAT found on the PlayStation 4: 1 is open, 2 is moderate, and 3 is strict, so see what your results change when you’re done. In my case, I used this method and was able to alleviate double NAT caused by using Google Wifi with an ISP router that cannot be put into modem only mode.
Although you may think that your NAT type is not as important as something like Internet speed, you are wrong. Games like Call of Duty and Fortnite are known to be a bit tougher depending on your NAT type, and recently Warframe didn’t let me play until I made the doubles disappear. NAT. So it is certainly worth doing something.
Actually, all you need is a PlayStation and access to your router, but a decent Ethernet cable will significantly speed up your connection and give you better download speeds and connectivity when playing online games.
