How to force restart and reset iPad

Sometimes, very rarely, your iPad may need to be reset, force restarted, or even factory reset. If you’re having problems with apps on your iPad, or iOS isn’t working as it should. Performing a force restart on your iPad can help fix many of the issues you may be facing without losing your data.

However, sometimes you may need to perform a hard factory reset on your iPad, such as when you bought a new iPad and would like to sell your old device or give it to a family member. This will remove everything from your iPad, including apps, your documents, settings, photos, and return your iPad to the state you received it when you opened the box.

If your iPad is a little older and has a home button at the bottom of the screen, you’ll need to press and hold the top button shown in the image above until the power off slider appears. On other models equipped with a Home button, you can also force restart your iPad by pressing and holding the top button and the Home button at the same time until the Apple logo appears, at which point you can release both buttons.

Factory resetting your iPad will erase all your data, photos, and apps from your tablet, restoring it to the exact state it was in when you first took it out of the box after purchase. Enter your password if required, and your device should appear on the left side of the Finder and iTunes apps. You will then be asked to confirm that you want to reset your iPad and remove all content, apps, and your personal data from the device.

Here you will be presented with several options, allowing you to “Reset all settings” or “Erase all content and settings”, as well as “Reset network settings” and a few more, but we will leave these options for another guide.

Once you’ve made your selection, you’ll be asked to confirm that you want to completely remove all data, media, and apps from your iPad. Once confirmed, your iPad will begin the reset process and delete everything from your tablet, returning it to the way it was when you first took it out of the box.
