How to mirror your iPhone on a TV without an Apple TV

If you have an iPhone and want to mirror or cast your screen to a large screen TV but don’t have an Apple TV. You’ll be pleased to know that this is still possible with modern AirPlay 2 (2018 and newer) TVs such as those made by Sony, Samsung and LG.

If your TV supports AirPlay 2, you can easily mirror your iPhone screen directly to your TV without having to purchase any additional Apple devices or adapters. Just follow the steps below to mirror videos, photos or streaming content from other apps and exactly what’s on your iPhone screen right on your big TV screen.

Mirror your iPhone’s screen on your TV

1. Make sure your iPhone is connected to the same network as your big screen TV.

2. Swipe down from the top right corner of the iPhone screen to open the Control Center page.

3. Select the screen mirror icon, represented by two overlapping rectangles.

4. Select your TV from the list of devices that support AirPlay 2. You may need to enable AirPlay on your TV before you can stream content to it. To do this on a Samsung TV, go to Settings > General > Apple AirPlay.

5. A code may appear on the TV screen. Enter this on your iPhone to enable mirroring and content streaming.

6. If your TV is on the same network and not listed, your TV may not support AirPlay 2. In this case, follow the instructions below using a third-party app or a combination of app and hardware, such as a Roku set-top box. or a Chromecast adapter.

7. To stop mirroring from your iPhone again, swipe down from the top right corner to enter the Control Center area. Tap Screen Mirroring, then select Stop Mirroring.

Connect your iPhone to your TV using a third party app

There are several apps to mirror iPhone content to your TV if your TV doesn’t support AirPlay 2. For example, set-top boxes like Roku or Chromecast allow you to connect to them using AirPlay 2. I would suggest using these apps and systems that you, maybe already own before looking for something else as they will provide the fastest connection with no lag. Roku-integrated TVs are available from several manufacturers and support the ability to mirror your iPhone to Roku TV using AirPlay 2.

If you don’t already have a Roku or similar device, a quick search on the official Apple App Store will give you a selection of mirroring apps, depending on your needs and the age of your TV. AirScreen is one such app worth checking out.
