How to Retrieve Deleted Messages from the Messenger App

If you or a family member accidentally deleted messages from the Meta Messenger app and would like to recover them, this quick guide follows from our previous article on how to delete messages from the Messenger app. In this followup article, you will learn how to recover these deleted messages depending on how much time has passed since the original message was deleted. Unfortunately, sometimes it is still impossible to recover those messages that have been deleted for quite a long time.

If you have accidentally deleted messages from the Messenger app, the first thing to do is to check if your message was mistakenly moved to the message archive area in the app instead of completely deleted. It’s a long way to go but might be worth checking out as it’s pretty easy to make my mistake and it could save you a lot of heartache. This can be done randomly by swiping on the conversation. After that, the options “Archive” and “More” will appear. In the “Advanced” section, you will find the option to permanently delete messages.

Check the archives first

To check the Messenger app archive for possibly erroneously archived messages and recover deleted messages:

1. Open the Messenger app on your phone or tablet and select your profile picture.

2. When you view your profile, select Archived Chats from the list.

3. A list of all your archived messages will be displayed, allowing you to easily restore any that you accidentally moved or tried to delete.

4. To unzip a message, swipe it from right to left and you’ll see the “Unzip” option. Selecting this option will bring it back to your active conversations and restore the message.

If you prefer to perform the restore operation using a browser on your computer or laptop, you can do so by visiting the official Facebook website or rather the Meta website in the browser you specified.

1. Just open Facebook/Meta in your browser and log in.

2. Then select the official “Messenger” icon in the top right corner of the page.

3. A list of all your conversations will be presented at the bottom with an option to View All in Messenger, select this option.

4. In the chat window, select the threedot icon “…” at the top of the main chat list on the left side.

5. Another menu will appear and about halfway through you will see an option to select “Archived Chats”. Choose it.

6. A complete list of all your archived messages will be presented, allowing you to reply to the chat and move it back to your active conversations list in Messenger.

If you have checked your archive and the deleted message is not in the list. You’ll be pleased to know that Facebook keeps deleted messages, allowing you to recover them. While they don’t confirm for how long, they will keep deleted messages before they are permanently deleted.

The last way to recover deleted messages from Messenger is to download Facebook data before they are completely deleted from the server. To do this, ask Facebook and Meta Support to send you a copy of all your data on your website, or if possible, only the messages that have been deleted. It’s a long way, but we hope that the deleted message you’re trying to recover from the Messenger app will be included in one of these backups. To request profile picture data from Facebook using iOS:

Request Messenger Data from iOS

1. Open the Messenger app and select your profile picture again at the top of the page.

2. Your profile page will open, and at the bottom you will be able to access “Account Settings”.

4. If you don’t want to download all the Facebook Messenger app data, uncheck all other checkboxes that may be selected.

5. Now scroll down the page and click “Create File”. This will send a request to the servers to export your data and the status of the file will be “Pending”.

6. Once the file has been exported, you will be able to examine its contents to recover deleted messages if they are still available and have not been permanently deleted by Facebook.
