How to Use ChatGPT to Generate a Resume

Whether you’re looking for your first job or have been in the business for decades, there’s one thing we all agree on: finding a job is a tedious process. As if finding a job that matches your qualifications and expectations wasn’t hard enough, you should also combine all of your work experience and strengths into one application.

This application consists of many elements that you have to further customize, such as references, experience, cover letter, creative portfolio, and the most intimidating element for some: a resume.

ChatGPT is here to help you write your resume in one go.

How ChatGPT can help with the job application process

You can use ChatGPT to generate ideas for your application from scratch, or refine and optimize your ideas and texts that may not be true at the moment. But beyond that, it can help you answer questions about resume writing and best practices. Here’s how to get started.

Additional note: if you have access to Bing Chat, it can also serve as your guide in this process as it offers the same experience as ChatGPT but with Internet access.

  • Choose resume template

  • ChatGPT will help you write your resume, but before you can start writing, you’ll need to choose a template. The program you use to write your resume, such as Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and Canva, most likely already has a resume template.

A quick Google search for resume templates will also give you hundreds of editable templates that you can import into the program of your choice. I recommend that you choose the one that best suits you and suits your needs.

You then need to go to the OpenAI ChatGPT home page and sign in or create an account. It’s free to use and the registration process is simple and doesn’t require a credit card or obscure information. But keep in mind that this week due to the arrival of GPT-4, the service is heavily overloaded. As such, you may (and probably will) have to try logging in several times before you’re satisfied.

  • Add text

If you’d like ChatGPT to generate your resume text from scratch, just ask.

Whether you want him to write your professional resume or just a part of it, ask him directly. For example, I asked ChatGPT, “Can you write a short, professional resume about my role as a tech journalist?” In a matter of seconds, he did it, as shown in the photo.

While ChatGPT is perfectly capable of providing copy-and-paste-ready content on your resume, you should customize the text to match your real-life experience and not look like it was written by a robot. Ultimately, employers want to know what makes you unique, and without your help, the chatbot will only have access to general questions about your role.

  • Use ChatGPT to edit your own text

Whether you decide to fill out the template yourself before using ChatGPT help, or you have an existing resume that you want to enhance, ChatGPT is a great resource for fine-tuning your text. Just copy and paste your own text and ask ChatGPT to improve it.

For example, I asked ChatGPT: “You can improve this part of the resume: I write articles about technology.” In seconds, ChatGPT created a much more sophisticated section, incorporating a professional tone and making this simple sentence more complex, as shown in the photo. Once you get the result, you can always ask ChatGPT to tweak it, using prompts like “Make it shorter” or “Can you turn on [détails supplémentaires]”.
