How to watch Blue Origin launch GMA host Michael Strahan and his crew into space today

Editor’s Note: Blue Origin has successfully launched Michael Strahan and 5 other people into space and back on the New Shepard NS-19 space tourist flight. The recovery of the crew is already underway. Live updates

Blue Origin’s third manned mission is scheduled to launch today (Dec 11) and you can watch it live online.

The company’s New Shepard spacecraft will send GMA host and former NFL star Michael Strahan and five other people into suborbital space on the mission, which is known as NS-19.

Live Updates: Michael Strahan’s Blue Origin Launch in New Shepard

Takeoff is scheduled for 9:45 am EDT (1445 GMT) on Saturday, although that could change due to weather or technical issues. You can watch the action via BlueOrigin.com and here on Space.com, if possible. The Blue Origin live broadcast is scheduled to begin at 8:15 am EDT (1315 GMT). The company also plans mission updates via @BlueOrigin on Twitter.

If past missions are any indication, Blue Origin will also hold a post-flight press conference, which Space.com will also include on our website if possible.

NS-19 will be the first mission to occupy all six seats of the New Shepard spacecraft. (The previous two manned flights each sent four people back and forth.) Below is a list of the other people on the team besides Strahan.

More: Blue Origin Launch Explained With GMA Host Michael Strahan

  • Laura Shepard Churchley, 74, the eldest daughter of NASA astronaut Alan Shepard. Shepard was the first NASA astronaut to fly into space, and the New Shepard spacecraft is named after him.
  • Dylan Taylor, 51, president and CEO of the space exploration company Voyager Space, founder of the nonprofit Space for Humanity and co-founder of the Federation of Commercial Space Flight.
  • Evan Dick, age undisclosed, engineer and investor who is a volunteer pilot for Starfighters Aerospace.
  • Lane Bess, age undisclosed, director and founder of a technology-focused venture fund called Bess Ventures and Advisory.
  • Cameron Bess, age undisclosed, who is Lane’s daughter. They stream a variety of content on Twitch under the alias MeepsKitten.

Strahan and Churchley are flying as Blue Origin guests, as did “Mercury 13” pilot Wally Funk and “Star Trek” actor William Shatner on New Shepard’s first and second manned flights, respectively. The other four passengers are paying for their seats; Blue Origin has yet to publicly reveal a price for customers.

In a typical 11-minute flight on Blue Origin, the rocket launches and lands autonomously, and the spacecraft also flies autonomously and parachutes down minutes after the rocket. The crew members will fly well above the Kármán line, an internationally recognized boundary of space that lies 100 kilometers (62 miles) above the Earth’s surface.

New Shepard has made 18 flights to date, but most of those previous efforts were unmanned tests or payload research flights. Blue Origin is still recruiting clients willing to pay for microgravity experiments, along with super-wealthy tourists who can afford a trip to suborbital space.
