IBM awards French team Trashtag, 2021 global winner of the Call for Code Global Challenge University Edition

IBM has announced the winners of the Global Call for Code Challenge 2021. For this edition, developers and innovators from around the world have been invited to tackle climate change with open source technology. This year, a French team, Trashtag, won the “Call for Code University Edition” global challenge, a partnership between IBM and the Clinton Global Initiative.

Trashtag: winner in the University category

Trashtag’s French team, consisting of three ISEP engineering students, Maë Bain, Adrian Kinsey-Hillou and Erwann David, uses AI, the blockchain and the cloud to verify, monitor and reward wild pollution waste disposal in natural areas. She won first prize in the University category and will receive US $ 10,000, as well as an invitation for team members to be interviewed for possible positions at IBM.

“We congratulate all of our participants for their dedication and ingenuity in the fight against climate change,” said Ruth Davis, director of IBM Call for Code. “The Trashtag team developers are a testament to the best that the open source community has to offer and make us optimistic about how technology can help combat climate change and shape the future.”

All 3 students were inspired by the “garbage label” actions needed to clean up waste linked to wild pollution in our society. If in developed countries this waste is a source of insanity and disgust, it is even more dangerous in less wealthy countries. ” Water Pollution by the residues causes the appearance of certain illnesses, such as cholera, dysentery, or even diarrhea. the poverty and unemployment have become a global problem. These two problems are responsible for almost 2,000,000 deaths worldwide each year, ”says the Trashtag team.

Waste, a new gold mine!

Trashtag uses cutting-edge technologies to help address these challenges. The user who will clean a site collecting garbage, once the action has been validated, will be rewarded with an amount in cryptocurrencies. This amount is determined by artificial intelligence and depends on the amount of garbage collected. This cryptocurrency called “Jobcoin” was created using blockchain technology and one day it will be available in different marketplaces, at this time, therefore, it will be possible to exchange it with other cryptocurrencies such as stablecoins (digital dollar).

“We had the idea to connect the emerging crypto-finance sector with employment, in order to clean up the environment. The ambition of our project is to create with the help of a cryptocurrency “Jobcoin”, an economic interest in the collection of abandoned waste and to create an ecological financing standard that allows to limit extreme poverty “, declares the team of l ‘Trashtag.” With this project, we want to help limit the amount of trash that could end up in water supplies. Our solution can help local authorities save money on waste collection so they can reinvest in setting up recycling centers. “

The winner of the Call for Code Global Challenge 2021

The winner of the fourth annual Global Call for Codes Challenge is Saaf Water, a platform for water quality sensors and analysis.

The three themes proposed this year among the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals were drinking water and sanitation; the hunger in the world ; responsible production and consumption.

To date, this global challenge has brought together more than 500,000 developers looking for new solutions in 180 countries. More than 20,000 Call for Code applications have been created using open source software such as Red Hat OpenShift, IBM Cloud, IBM Watson, and IBM Blockchain, as well as data from IBM’s The Weather Company and API and development resources from partners such as Esri and Twilio .

Fourteen Call for Code projects were open source in collaboration with The Linux Foundation.
