The Australian Shepherd is a dog breed that has experienced a meteoric rise in France. According to data released by Société Centrale Canine, 2022 has not given up on its popularity.

Australian Shepherd, young breed

La Centrale Canine, founded in 1881, is an association that maintains a genealogical book for dogs or Livre des Origins Français (LOF)*. The one whose mission is to promote dog breeds in the country, on January 18, 2023, presented the 20 most beloved French breeds. According to last year’s data, “The Australian Shepherd confirms its lead position with over 20,000 births in 2022, followed by the Golden Retriever, which registers almost 15,000 births per year.” In third place is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or “Stuffy”, with over 12,500 puppies in 2022. A Belgian Shepherd comes out of the podium.

*LOF is a database containing all genealogy, health and performance data of purebred dogs. All puppies born to LOF parents are registered there, but only after a confirmation session do they receive their pedigree, a document certifying that the dog meets the characteristics set out in its breed standard.

As Science et Avenir explained in a previous article, the Australian Shepherd is not native to Australia. This breed was actually born in the Basque Country. In the 19th century, due to a lack of work, many pastors emigrated to Oceania with their dogs in the hope of applying their skills to sheep farming. Around 1900, pastors traveled to the United States, a country where the dog breed was nicknamed the “Australian Shepherd” because of its origins. Finally, “inThe breed as we know it today originated exclusively in the United States,” Centrale Canine said in a press release.
