In Guadeloupe, the government grant to vaccine caregivers

CORONAVIRUS – The government has pledged to provide messenger RNA-free Covid-19 vaccines to caregivers in Guadeloupe who wish to do so, in response to a request from those who challenge the vaccination requirement, the Foreign Minister said on Tuesday (November 23). . Sébastien Lecornu.

The protest against the obligation to vaccinate caregivers and firefighters that began on November 15 has turned into a social crisis marked by violence in Guadeloupe, where a third of the population lives below the poverty line according to INSEE.

With the caregivers, “we are also in a social dialogue between the employer, the Ministry of Health and Solidarity, and its employees to seek solutions”, so “we committed ourselves last night to look for another type. Vaccines ”for those who refuse messenger RNA vaccines, said Sébastien Lecornu in France2.

Vaccines without messenger RNA, but less effective

The vaccines available so far in Guadeloupe were “mainly vaccines” Pfizer / BioNtech, said the Ministry of Overseas AFP. The efficacy of the so-called traditional vaccines is proven: AstraZeneca’s is estimated at 63.09% according to WHO data and 66.09% for Janssen. However, according to a study by the American University of New York, published in July 2021, both lose their effectiveness against the Delta variant. In contrast, messenger RNA vaccines retain high efficacy even against variants. And despite the rare side effects, they retain a favorable benefit-risk assessment.

This lower efficacy and a less favorable risk-benefit ratio means that these RNA-free vaccines are practically no longer administered in metropolitan France.

A “dialogue forum” with caregivers

“For those who refuse to be vaccinated and prefer to abandon their quality of caregivers and are already asking for professional retraining, we will support them and there we will need the regional council, so Ary Chalus (president of the regional council of Guadeloupe, Editor’s note) will mobilize on these issues ”, added Sébastien Lecornu.

On Monday, Prime Minister Jean Castex announced the creation of a “dialogue forum” in order to “convince and support individually and humanely” professionals affected by the vaccination obligation, in an attempt to calm the conflagration.

For the overseas minister, “it would be scandalous not to apply the law of the Republic on the obligation to vaccinate caretakers and firefighters in Guadeloupe.” According to him, 87% of caregivers and 43% of firefighters are vaccinated.
