“Ready for H”2“from INNIO

Jenbacher Type 4 gas engines – rated between 500 and 900 kilowatts (kW) – are now available for operation with 100% hydrogen or natural gas / hydrogen mixtures.

From 2022, all INNIO Jenbacher gas engines will be offered with the option “Ready for H2, and will be able to work with volumetric hydrogen concentrations in pipeline gas up to 25%. Engines can also be easily converted and switched from natural gas to 100% hydrogen.

In addition, most of the INNIO Jenbacher natural gas engines currently in use can be upgraded to run on hydrogen contained in pipeline gas up to 25% volume, or converted from natural gas to 100% feed hydrogen.

INNIO Jenbacher gas engines are ideal for generating electricity from hydrogen.

The result of many years of experience

Twenty years ago, Jenbacher’s first 150 kW test engine ran on 100% hydrogen at a demonstration plant in northern Germany. Two decades later, in 2020, following a series of other demonstration projects, INNIO and HanseWerk Natur teamed up to develop industrial-scale hydrogen-fueled gas engines. Both companies have unveiled a flagship project using various blends of hydrogen and natural gas, including 100% hydrogen, to power the world’s first 1 megawatt (MW) gas engine.

“I am especially proud of the launch of the first line of engines.”Ready for H2“INNIO in the segment of electricity generation from 200 kW to 10.4 MW. Our wide range of Jenbacher gas engines with innovative and regulated power supplies – natural gas, carbon neutral biogas or hydrogen rich fuels – are helping to lay the foundation for a cleaner energy future, “commented Carlos Lange, CEO of INNIO.” Jenbacher gas engines now run on natural gas, can be converted to H-power.2 when hydrogen becomes more readily available. By choosing to invest in a Jenbacher natural gas engine today, our customers are also investing in the future. ”

With nearly 90 hydrogen projects in 28 countries, INNIO offers over 30 years of experience in engines running on hydrogen up to 70% volume and generating over 250 MW. These installations can be found on all continents with many INNIO Jenbacher Type 2, Type 3, Type 4 and Type 6 gas engines.

The power of hydrogen

Green hydrogen, as an energy storage medium for volatile renewable energy, allows renewable energy to be stored for months or seasons. This potential will make renewable energy sources more reliable and transportable, thereby supporting the acceleration of fossil fuel replacement in the energy sector.

INNIO aims to be a leader in the deployment of H.2 which will accelerate and enable the transformations needed to move from fossil fuels to renewable energies. INNIO Jenbacher hydrogen gas engines typically operate in a combined heat and power configuration, providing nearly 90% hydrogen utilization.

In 2021, EcoVadis presented INNIO Jenbacher with a silver medal in recognition of its commitment to a climate neutral, greener and safer energy future. This makes INNIO Jenbacher one of the 17% of its colleagues for sustainable development.
