Jenbacher Type 4 gas engines – rated between 500 and 900 kilowatts (kW) – are now available for operation with 100% hydrogen or natural gas / hydrogen mixtures.
From 2022, all INNIO Jenbacher gas engines will be offered with the option “Ready for H2“, and will be able to work with volumetric hydrogen concentrations in pipeline gas up to 25%. Engines can also be easily converted and switched from natural gas to 100% hydrogen.
In addition, most of the INNIO Jenbacher natural gas engines currently in use can be upgraded to run on hydrogen contained in pipeline gas up to 25% volume, or converted from natural gas to 100% feed hydrogen.

The result of many years of experience
Twenty years ago, Jenbacher’s first 150 kW test engine ran on 100% hydrogen at a demonstration plant in northern Germany. Two decades later, in 2020, following a series of other demonstration projects, INNIO and HanseWerk Natur teamed up to develop industrial-scale hydrogen-fueled gas engines.
