iPhone 13: good enough to shine, not good enough to last

After testing the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, it is clear that these two models are the best iPhones available today. But they are also the most expensive, with prices starting at 1,159 and 1,259 euros respectively. The rest of Apple’s 2021 smartphone lineup is completed by the iPhone 13, starting at $ 909, and the iPhone 13 Mini, starting at $ 809. These two phones offer a similar experience to their predecessors, at time that provide users with substantial savings.

You might as well put it right away: These two smartphones are well worth the detour. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini are similar to the Pro models, although they do have some differences. Both have an aluminum housing, rather than stainless steel, and five color options. The Pro models have a matte finish, while the standard models have a glossy, glossy finish instead. Personally, I prefer these colors to those of the Pro models, especially blue.

At the rear, we find a new arrangement of the camera lenses. Not only are they much larger than last year’s model, but they also have a different layout. Instead of being stacked vertically, the lenses are now staggered. The flat-edge design that we saw Apple adopt with the launch of the iPhone 12 remains.

On the right edge of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini is the power button, or side button, as Apple calls it. On the left side we find the switch for silent mode and the keys to increase / decrease the volume, as well as the SIM card slot.

Apple’s proven Lightning port, while it should soon be left in the basement in favor of USB-C, is still present at the bottom of the phone. The notch where the True Depth camera that powers the Face ID system sits has been narrowed a bit. It is not as wide as in previous models, but it is a bit taller. The iPhone 13 has a 6.1-inch screen, while the iPhone 13 Mini retains its 5.4-inch screen. Both sizes are very comfortable in the hand, the smallest is the easiest to use with one hand at all times. Even the iPhone 13 is comfortable to use with one hand.

Things get interesting when it comes to the performance and overall experience of the iPhone 13 or iPhone 13 Mini. Inside, the phones are practically identical to the Pro models, except for a smaller battery for the Mini. They both feature the same A15 Bionic processor, 5G connectivity, and a brighter OLED screen.

The change in screen brightness is most noticeable when the phone is used outdoors; it is much easier to see what is displayed on the screen. Both models lack the ProMotion feature, which debuted on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max this year. ProMotion is the name that Apple gave to its variable refresh rate display technology. The Pro’s display can go from 10Hz to 120Hz depending on what you’re doing on the phone. This is a subtle but noticeable feature, although it is not essential.

Another area where the iPhone 13s differs from the iPhone 13 Pro is in the rear cameras. The iPhone 13 has two 12-megapixel cameras, while the Pro has three. The smartphone has a wide camera, which is the main camera with which you will probably take most of your photos and videos. Then there is the ultra-wide camera, which allows you to zoom out an image or during a video without having to physically move.

The absence of the third camera, a telephoto lens for zooming, can be very detrimental. Despite the ultra-wide camera offering 2x optical zoom, while the main wide-angle camera adds 5x digital zoom.

Both Apple smartphones have the same cinematic mode for recording videos as the Pro models. Typically, this feature is reserved by Apple for more expensive and presumably better performing iPhone models. In the camera app, there is now a Cinematic Mode option. When selected, you can record a video that adds a blurred background or foreground effect. It’s an effect we’ve all seen in movies, and so far it’s been very difficult to recreate it on a smartphone.

Aside from the lack of the telephoto camera on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini, the camera experience is equivalent to that of the Pro models. The decision to integrate cinematic mode on all four models comes as a good surprise for iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini owners.

Better than iPhone 12?

This year, Apple touted longer battery life for all four iPhone 13 models. Rightly so. The iPhone 13 has enough power to last a full day of use, and the Mini comes close. Last year, I couldn’t make it past 19 hours before the iPhone 12 Mini sold out. The iPhone 13 Mini may take an hour or two more before shutting down. Base storage capacity doubled this year, with 128GB being the minimum for the starting price. You can also choose more storage (256GB or 512GB) if you need more space.

After testing all four iPhone 13 models, it is clear that the standard iPhone 13 is good enough to emerge as the best option for most users looking for a quality Apple smartphone with a more ergonomic screen diagonal. It’s affordable and offers the same performance, battery life, and photo features as its Pro counterpart.

However, if you already own an iPhone 12, there is no point in rushing out to buy an iPhone 13. For everyone else, the iPhone 13 is a worthy upgrade, name, or good choice for a first iPhone. You can order the iPhone 13 or iPhone 13 Mini right now, but be prepared to wait. All models are currently shipped with delivery times of a few weeks.
