IPhone Screens: Apple Won’t Let You Go

Once again, Apple has tried to prevent third-party repairers from replacing iPhone screens without negative consequences for the end user.

And once again, Apple had to back down due to criticism.

But Apple will still try. And it is likely that it will.

For those of you who haven’t followed up, here’s a quick rundown.

When the iPhone 13 came out, third-party repairers quickly discovered some really bad news: swapping the screen for another genuine screen locks up Face ID and other features. Solutions have been found to fix this problem, but they involve unsoldering a chip from the broken screen and micro-soldering it into the replacement screen.

These are surgical level skills.

Well, it seems that Apple has backed down. The company will release an update for iOS 15 that will replace the screens without blocking Face ID.

If this all sounds familiar, that’s because it is. Apple made a similar attempt with the iPhone 12.

And then he backed off on that decision.

Or we could go further back, to the Error 53 debacle.

It’s clear that Apple really wants full and absolute control over screen repairs. After all, why would Apple try to sneak in with these limitations and then have to backtrack?

Clearly, there is some kind of design requirement here. This requirement is certainly not to “make repairs as easy and profitable as possible for iPhone owners.”

The idea that this happened – twice – as some kind of accident is hard to accept. Impossible, in fact.

And it won’t be long before Apple hits the mark. It’s an engineering problem, and Apple is good at solving engineering problems.

I’m not sure the reason for Apple’s obsession. The control. Money. An honest and deep belief that third-party repairs are a danger to customers.

Whatever the reason, it seems that Apple is more concerned with putting its profits before the environment and is overlooking its other green efforts as a green wash.
