The legal publisher Lexbase announces this Monday, January 24, the acquisition of two companies to expand its portfolio of solutions that has already conquered more than 35,000 legal professionals. The amount of the transactions was not disclosed.
A bibliographic search engine
Lexbase has made use of Doctrinal, a bibliographic search engine specializing in legal doctrine “unique in France”, says Fabien Girard de Barros, director of information and development at Lexbase, at L’Usine Digitale. Owned by the Thomson Reuters group, it was co-produced with the Cujas Interuniversity Library and the law firms Gide Loyrette Nouel and Shearman & Sterling. Since 1993, it has compiled a daily inventory of academic articles (all analyzes submitted by academics and lawyers) published in more than 200 French and English journals.
“This product is of interest to the French market, but not only”, adds Fabien Girard de Barros. In fact, the Doctrinal is also used by foreign universities in the United States, Canada, Japan, Italy, and Germany for needs related to “comparative law.” “This product is very editorial. It is part of our DNA as a legal publisher that complements our transversal offer of legal information”, he adds.
Tracking the speaking time of politicians
The Parisian company also offers Pluralisme, a SaaS software for monitoring politicians’ talk and air time. This solution responds to a legal obligation: since 1986, the audiovisual media are subject to respect for the pluralistic expression of currents of thought and opinion, particularly during electoral periods. The software is intended for media subject to pluralism and the transmission of minutes of political interventions to the Regulatory Authority for Audiovisual and Digital Communication (Arcom). The latter is responsible for verifying the declared times using the software.
“We are working on improving the speaking time recording system through artificial intelligence. We want to improve the visual and vocal recognition of the different personalities to get an even more refined match between the person speaking and the one we see on the screen. also working on a progressive automation of this identification and therefore of accounting”, confesses Fabien Girard de Barros. Likewise, Lexbase wants to achieve “a thematic cartography of media expression” based on “objective and rigorous data”.
