Vancouver – Lush Cosmetics announced Monday that it will shut down its Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Snapchat accounts on Friday in an effort to address what it says are consumer mental health issues.

The company says its global brand presence on the platforms will remain disabled until the platforms take steps to provide a more secure environment for users.

Lush says it is investing in new ways to connect with its customers and is still present on Twitter and YouTube for now.

The company claims to have tried this as early as 2019 with its UK communication channels, but claims its determination has been reinforced by recent reports.

Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen said Facebook prioritizes user engagement and growth over online safety.

Documents compiled by Facebook’s former IT engineer suggest that the social media giant was aware of the damage its products were causing and has generally done little or nothing to alleviate it.
