Map. Countries that have legalized recreational cannabis remain rare

What’s with the medical cannabis in all of this?

More and more countries are legalizing the use of medical cannabis. In Latin America, it is already authorized in Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico and Peru. In the United States, it is allowed in 33 of the 50 states.

With the exception of Hungary, Bulgaria and Latvia, all EU member states allow, to varying degrees, the therapeutic use of cannabis or, at least, products containing it. In France, medicinal cannabis is the subject of an experiment led by the ANSM (the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products).

The cultivation of cannabis for medical use is authorized in Lesotho, Thailand and Lebanon. The government of Morocco, the world’s largest producer of marijuana, approved a bill in March 2021 that authorizes “medical, cosmetic and industrial” use, maintaining the prohibition of its recreational use.
