Are you familiar with each of the many feature films that make up the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Played by Robert Downey Jr. since the first Iron Man (directed by Jon Favreau in 2008), Tony Stark is a genius inventor, heir to a colossal fortune, and arms dealer around the world. The day he is captured in Afghanistan, his life changes completely. After creating a huge metal armor to escape, he decides to put his existence and his ingenuity at the service of the weakest. Then he becomes Iron Man, a superhero who will soon join the ranks of the famous Avengers at the invitation of Nick Fury.

DID YOU KNOW ?

origins

In the original comic, created by Stan Lee in 1963, Tony Stark was held captive not in Afghanistan, but in Vietnam. As in the feature film as we know it, the character secretly worked to create his first armor, which allowed him to escape by destroying his enemies.

Inspiration

Howard Hughes (the famous billionaire businessman played by Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator) and Elon Musk (the founder of Tesla and SpaceX) have served as inspirations for Tony Stark’s character at various times. In the 1960s, Marvel writers were inspired by Hughes to bring Iron Man to life. As for Elon Musk, from whom Jon Favreau’s Tony Stark borrows several characteristics, he has a small cameo role in Iron Man 2, released in 2010.
