Elon Musk’s companies are notorious for not spending a lot of money on marketing, relying instead on the huge popularity of their founder. However, SpaceX decided to do merchandising with Mattel.
The toy maker announced this week that it will begin shipping SpaceX-inspired Matchbox toys starting next year. For decades, Matchbox has been producing toy versions of all kinds of iconic vehicles, from tractors to military fighter jets to racing cars.
The deal between the two companies is expected to last for several years, but details of future toys have not yet been announced. “We look forward to working with Mattel to inspire the next generation of space explorers and enthusiasts,” said Brian Bielde, vice president of SpaceX.
Matchbox has created space-themed collections in the past, including the US Space Shuttle and the NASA Rocket Transport Ship. Hot Wheels, another brand from the Mattel universe, produced miniatures of the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers.
In 2018, Hot Wheels released a plastic model of Elon Musk’s cherry red Tesla Roadster, which was sent into space as part of the first demonstration launch of the Falcon Heavy rocket.
The SpaceX Collection by Matchbox will go on sale in 2023.
