Published: 11.12.2022 – 08:00

Billionaire Elon Musk has taken over the American social network Twitter. This takeover raises many questions and is sure to have political and even geopolitical consequences. The Media Workshop discusses this with Asma Mhalla, Digital Geopolitical Specialist.

On Thursday, October 27, South African-Canadian-American billionaire Elon Musk completed his takeover of Twitter for a tidy $44 billion. His first act was to fire the company’s management team and half of its staff. So who is also the boss of Tesla and SpaceX has a new toy.

This acquisition raises many questions. This will certainly have political and even geopolitical implications, some see it as a risk to democracies around the world.

To discuss this, L’atelier des medias welcomes Asma Mhalla, Digital Geopolitical Specialist, Lecturer at Sciences Po Paris and at the Ecole Polytechnique.

This interview is about the personality of Elon Musk and his interest in buying Twitter, an American company that does not make a profit. We are talking about freedom of speech, moderation, international reaction to this takeover – in Russia, in China, in the EU. At the end of the conversation, we will discuss where this takeover could lead in the future, such as the migration that has already begun to other more decentralized platforms such as Mastodon.
