Microsoft adds performance verification to its Xbox app

Microsoft allows users of the Xbox for Windows application to verify a computer’s compatibility with a game before downloading it.

Is it better to play on PC or console? This eternal debate rages on within the community of players and each one has its own argument. For one thing, some rely on the keyboard and mouse duo, while others can’t imagine playing without a controller. A gaming PC costs much more than a next-generation console, but its use is not exclusive to video games …

It is true that high-end PCs are more efficient and offer graphic adjustment possibilities that consoles do not offer. Except all PCs aren’t necessarily racehorses. If there’s one area where consoles outperform PCs, it’s simplicity. Buying a game on a console is extremely simple, you just have to start the game and play (after a little “quick” update very often). The PC gamer should be careful with his setup, especially if it is modest.

Microsoft makes life easier for “small” configurations

The Redmond firm has added a feature to its Xbox for Windows interface that, let’s be clear, is primarily aimed at modest machine owners. If you own an RTX 3080, which we tested here, this feature probably won’t do you much good for a while. This is a new label (like PEGI) that determines the expected level of performance based on settings.

In short, next to the download button, it is directly shown if your machine configuration is sufficient. However, Microsoft has not specified whether this tag is based on the minimum required setting, the recommended setting, or other criteria.

However, it appears that the company is taking the time to roll out the games one-on-one in its own database as some titles indicate that the performance evaluation is not yet available. This type of functionality already exists thanks to several independent sites that estimate the degree of compatibility of a game with its hardware. However, if this tag proves to be reliable enough, it could simplify the lives of players and prevent them from investigating or being disappointed.

How to activate this function?

Unfortunately, this tag is not natively available in the app yet. For the more impatient, there is a simple procedure to join and benefit from the Insider program: download Xbox Insider, go to Overview and join “Windows Gaming”, launch the Xbox application and update as necessary.
