Microsoft: Windows 10 updates go yearly

Microsoft is beginning to roll out its Windows 10 21H2 Update, also known as Windows 10 November 2021 Update. As part of this rollout, the management of the American giant has just released information that will not be unanimous among Windows users. 10: It will go from a semi-annual update to an annual one, like the one already offered by Windows 11.

The next Windows 10 feature update, which will follow 21H2, will take place in the second half of 2022, Microsoft said. The Family and Professional editions of the 21H2 update will benefit from 18 months of support, while the Enterprise and Education editions will benefit from 30 months, starting this Tuesday. Microsoft is renaming the service option for Windows 10 versions to “General Availability Channel” as of Update 21H2, replacing the current term “Semi-Annual Channel” for service options.

The Redmond firm staff further indicates that the x64 emulation built into Windows 11 on Arm will only be available for Windows 11, and not Windows 10 on Arm. However, Microsoft had announced that x64 emulation would be a Windows 10 feature in Arm. Unsurprisingly, Microsoft will restrict the deployment of Windows 10 21H2, as it has generally been doing lately with new Windows feature updates. This means that not all eligible devices will receive notifications that users can download it immediately; instead, it will be offered first to devices where Microsoft believes users will have a good experience running the update.

That said, Windows 10 users running Windows 10 2004 or later can proactively check for update 21H2 by going to Windows Update (Settings> Update & Security> Windows Update) or looking for updates. At this point, some users may see that they can opt for Windows 11 and be able to download and install it right away if they prefer to go that route. Microsoft says that the Windows 11 deployment is progressing faster than expected and that they are making the Windows 11 upgrade more available to Windows 10-rated devices.

Carnelian options to come

Microsoft will also make version 21H2 available to administrators starting today, using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Windows Update for Business, Software Download Center / Media Creation Tool, and Volume Licensing. Service Center (VLSC). The promised 2021 version of the Windows 10 Enterprise Long Term Service Channel (LTSC) is also available starting today. This edition will be supported for five years instead of ten, as previously recognized by Microsoft.

Windows 10 21H2 will be a quick and short installation for users who already have Windows 10 2004 or later; the update will be more like a monthly cumulative update, as it contains very few new features. Earlier this year, Microsoft management said that Windows 10 21H2 features will include support for the WPA3 H2E standards for improved Wi-Fi security, support for Windows Hello for Business for simplified deployment models, as well as support for compute GPUs on Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) and Azure IoT Edge for Linux on Windows Deployments (EFLOW) for machine learning and other compute-intensive workflows.

Microsoft has also indicated that the new Windows Hello for Business deployment method, also known as “cloud trust,” is not ready yet and will be delivered in a future update for those with 21H2. Windows 10 version 21H2 also includes security updates for the following: Windows AI platform, Windows application platform and frameworks, Windows applications, Windows cryptography, Windows fundamentals, Windows writing and compositing, Windows kernel, Windows Media, Windows Office Media, and Windows virtualization.

Microsoft is updating several of its deployment tools and technologies concurrently with the 21H2 release, trying to align what’s available for Windows 10 with Windows 11. On a related note, Microsoft has started rolling out its updated Microsoft Store app. store, which debuted in Windows 11 on Windows 10 PCs. Microsoft will continue to provide updates and fixes for Windows 10 until October 2025. After that date, users will be faced with a rather complex choice: they will have to opt for Windows 11, run Windows 11 on devices that Microsoft has deemed ineligible, continue to run Windows 10 without security updates, or leave Windows entirely.
