The Intrepid studio took advantage of its December livestream to announce the migration of Ashes of Creation from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5. The developer illustrates it in a new MMORPG (snow capped mountains) land.
Every month, Intrepid studio teams host a live feed reporting on the development progress of Ashes of Creation, and the one in December, which just took place, was the subject of some big announcements, starting with the migration of Ashes of Creation. Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5.
As we recall, Epic recently unveiled the latest version of its graphics engine, Unreal Engine 5 (first released in its beta version for developers), with a set of technologies designed to facilitate the design of open virtual worlds capable of handling a large number of elements (objects, characters, etc.).
For several months now, the Intrepid Studio development team has been working on this migration of the Ashes of Creation game engine and was looking forward to implementing it for Alpha 1. Despite the alpha testing postponements (we now understand the reasons better), The developer ran out of time, so Alpha 1 was left with the UE4 version of the MMORPG.
However, this transition is now advanced enough to be revealed, and thus creative director Steven Sharif took advantage of the live stream to explore a new environment in the world of Verra (a mountainous area covered in snow), which by therefore it exploits the resources of EU5.
We particularly highlight the refined graphics, lighting effects and better handling of particle effects. We also noticed that character animations have been improved, particularly the jumping, spinning, and rock climbing phases. And, as usual, the stream is also an opportunity to discover action outfits or cosmetic skins (even if some players complain that the outfits and skins often considered the most successful are also those accessible, for now, via cosmetics packages from the store).
No doubt equally significant, the migration to Unreal Engine 5 should allow for a number of optimizations to the Ashes of Creation code, particularly in terms of the number of characters simultaneously displayed on the screen. The developer did some testing (fortress sieges with bots) and was obviously able to stage battles with up to 1300 characters simultaneously. Enough to consider 500v500 large-scale matchups to conquer the nodes of the game world, for example.
Evidently, bot testing is not entirely representative of what players will be able to experience concretely in real-world conditions, but we bet that Ashes of Creation will be able to take on its “massively” multiplayer status.
The developer is currently preparing the Alpha 2 of its MMORPG (scheduled for 2022). This new phase of testing should be an opportunity to experience in a more concrete way the latest technological updates of the game.
