This time, let’s talk about Talented Mr Ripley and of Luther, two very good programs from the streaming by subscription.
What movies and series to watch or rewatch on Netflix tonight?
A film well done: The Talented Mr. Ripley
The synopsis of the film
In the 1950s, young Tom Ripley was hired by Herbert Greenleaf, a wealthy American tycoon. His mission ? Bring Dickie, Herbert’s frivolous and spendthrift son back to the United States. Upon arriving in Italy, Tom befriends Dickie and his fiancée Marge.
He lets himself be drawn into their world of luxury, idleness and frivolity. Until Dickie got tired of Tom …
The Italian coast takes on the air of paradise in The Talented Mr. Ripley, the American adaptation of the book Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. Sunny landscapes, boat trips, evenings in jazz clubs… The first part of the film depicts a real postcard setting. But quickly, la dolce vita takes a morbid turn and becomes nothing but lies and manipulation.
Young Tom Ripley’s obsession with a handsome and cruel Dickie Greenleaf is thrilling to watch. The Talented Mr. Ripley is not the first film to immerse us in the world of Patricia Highsmith. In 1960, Plein Soleil, directed by René Clément, had already tackled this work with Alain Delon in the lead role.
Exit, the Frenchman and place a young Matt Damon in very good shape. At his side, leading actors: Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Philip Seymour Hoffman or Cate Blanchett. Expectations were high for this movie, Anthony Minghella’s debut after The English Patient, his Oscar-winning success.
The director does not disappoint with a feature film with an almost Hitchcockian atmosphere. The slowness of the action (the film lasts 2h15) allows time to get into the heads of the characters and The Talented Mr. Ripley is an effective and addicting psychological thriller.

A good detective series: Luther
The synopsis of the series
John Luther is a zealous policeman. His extreme involvement in work, boosted by his good results, disconnected him from any reality and normal social relationship. His temper is as angry as his will to corner criminals is great.
Except that sometimes, this stormy character leads him to the limits of morality and pushes him to make more than questionable choices …
Luther is also one of those series that enjoys the strong support of its fan community. She has been pushing for several months for the promise of a TV movie, announced by lead actor Idris Elba and creator Neil Cross, to come true.
She joins a little Sherlock : British, composed of two to six episodes of a little over an hour, depending on the season (five in number), with a main actor who burst the screen internationally. It must be said that the imposing Idris Elba, like Benedict Cumberbatch, is impressive.
The series, anchored in the dramatic register, tortured between tragicomedy, thriller, thriller, and the intimate drama, is not content to be a simple detective series. Luther push the parallel with Sherlock holmes, especially thanks to the resemblance that his hero cultivates with the famous detective.
What changes, however, is that it is more violent and raw: it is located in a gray London, in a chaotic society and a disillusioned police institution, where the characters are constantly abused and struggle to survive, even if it means to compromise.
Her gallery of protagonists (especially Alice) is as terrifying as they are fascinating, and no episode leaves you indifferent as the meeting between so many characters is intense. Luther is a very strong series that we recommend without hesitation.
