What movies to discover on Netflix this weekend?

A Good Spy Movie: Very Special Agents: UNCLE’s Code

Synopsis

In the midst of the Cold War, a CIA agent and his KGB rival are forced to cooperate to dismantle an international criminal organization. His only clue is the daughter of a missing German scientist. Very quickly, the race against time begins.

Our opinion

Very Special Agents: Code UNCLE is the adaptation of the television series of the same name. The latter aired during the 1960s. If Steven Soderbergh had been contacted for this project, it was British Guy Ritchie (Snatch, RocknRolla) who finally got it. Following the Holmes / Watson duo of Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law in Sherlock Holmes, Guy Ritchie introduces another dynamic couple with Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer.

In the middle of the Cold War, the association of the two rival agents generated sparks. In general, the actors are impeccable. Alicia Vikander as German mechanic and Elizabeth Debicki, the big baddie, make a very good impression. Very Special Agents: Code UNCLE takes up the codes of the best spy movies and pays tribute to the genre.

More fun than a James Bond, less tortured than a Jason Bourne, the result is brilliant, glamorous and entertaining. Without being very original, the production endures and intelligently uses the split screen. From this movie, we mainly remember the rhythm, the action and the vintage atmosphere. If a sequel isn’t planned at this point, let’s hope it sees the light of day anyway.

A science fiction film réussi: Edge of Tomorrow

Synopsis

In the near future, aliens have invaded Earth and nothing seems to be able to stop them. The inexperienced William Cage is sent to the front and dies there at the start of the fighting. Then he finds himself trapped in a time loop, forced to relive the same nightmare and perish over and over again …

Our opinion

Tom Cruise and science fiction is a great love story that often brings us spectacular movies. Edge of Tomorrow is no exception to the rule. Take the landing in Saving Private Ryan, drop some exoskeletons worthy of the best video games and bathe it all in a time-loop concept like in One Day Without End and you have an explosive mix where the poor hero experiences complicated moments.

It’s a perfect combination of genres where the action unfolds without downtime. The staging is fluid, the humor adds a bit of lightness, and the twists continue, despite a somewhat disappointing ending. We are trapped in this endless, evil, epic war, and finally, the end comes to hit us without expecting it, while we could well have prolonged the pleasure a bit. Fortunately, there is still a sequel in the works.

  • Here’s a sample from the feature film:

An excellent animated film: Dragons

Synopsis

Harold is a young Viking and son of the head of his tribe. In his village, the dragon fight is the favorite pastime of the inhabitants. The latter are considered dangerous and unpleasant creatures. Harold’s life, and his people, will be turned upside down by his encounter with a young reptile, not as monstrous as it seems.

Our opinion

Released in 2010, Dragons is the first part of a beautiful animation trilogy. The saga ended in 2019 with the theatrical release of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. However, keep in mind that there are also series derived from the universe of feature films. They are available on Netflix. Creation signed Dreamworks, Dragons is their 19th animated film and the one that further confirms the studio’s place as a serious competitor to Pixar.

After hits like Shrek, Kung-Fu Panda or Madagascar, Dreamworks changes course and signs a more mature story that relies less on humor to seduce. Initially, two former Disney employees decide to freely adapt a Cressida Cowell children’s novel. Directors Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders recount the unlikely friendship between a young Viking and a dragon, the lovable Toothless.

A tone reminiscent of Lilo and Stitch, also directed by DeBlois and Sanders. The relationship between Hiccup and Toothless makes this initiatory story special and fills it with tenderness, adventure and humor, without ever falling into foolishness. 3D animation sublimates Viking landscapes, especially during beautiful dragon flight scenes. By focusing more on feelings and characters than repeated banter, Dreamworks made a high-flying movie. Dragons is a gem that you never tire of looking at.
