What series to watch on Netflix tonight?

An impressive documentary series: Cheer

The daily life of a cheerleading team from Navarro College in the small town of Corsicana, Texas, as they prepare for the cheerleading national championships in Daytona, Florida.

The opinion of

Forget the images of hypersexualized girls with stiff smiles that come to mind when you think of cheerleaders. With Cheer, you’ll discover that cheerleading, a demanding co-ed sport that demands both muscle and mental strength, is much more than what pop culture would have us believe.

Through the day-to-day life of the young cheerleaders at Colegio Navarro, Cheer explores the determination and extraordinary athleticism shown by its protagonists to be the best in their discipline.

The first season of Cheer, released in early 2020, has given much to talk about on social media and in the press across the Atlantic. Building on that popularity, this documentary series returned to Netflix this month with a second round of episodes exploring the aftermath of Navarro’s cheerleading tribulations. We then explore both the media impact of the first season on the troop of athletes and the consequences of the pandemic on their activities and the eternal preparation for the national championship in Daytona.

Cheer’s young athletes dazzle with their strength of character, physical endurance and will. We quickly realize that being a cheerleader is a strenuous activity, one that continually puts the human body at risk and requires much more technique than simply waving pom poms. Season two is even more riveting because it not only addresses the influence of Cheer’s popularity on Navarro’s athletes, but also gives pride of place to the competing Trinity Valley College team.

If you are curious to know more about the world of cheerleading or are a fan of documentaries about the world of sports, throw Cheer episodes without hesitation.

A dystopian series: The 100

After a nuclear apocalypse condemns the survivors of humanity to live in space for several decades, the authorities decide to send a series of guinea pigs to Earth to determine the chances of survival. So they choose to send a hundred criminals who, upon arrival on the planet, discover a new world as dangerous as it is fascinating.

The opinion of

Starring a cast of young actors who look like top models, The 100 is a young adult series that will appeal to dystopia fans and sci-fi enthusiasts alike.

You should know that the series has seven seasons of uneven quality and that it draws its greatest strengths from its beginnings rather than from its end. Fortunately, The 100 features a gallery of varied characters that evolve throughout the seasons and captivate the viewer’s interest when the stage sometimes wobbles.

The 100 tests its heroes throughout the seasons and quickly breaks free of its tag as a teen series, focusing on its rich and well-managed post-apocalyptic universe. The episodes are full of adventures and dramas keeping a frantic pace.

If the quality of the series has diminished over the past two seasons, the fact remains that it will have started off with a bang and remains a compelling and captivating dystopia as a whole.

An endearing series: Au Fil des Jours

Remake of the series of the same name from the 1970s and 1980s, this comedy highlights a family of Cuban origin whose single mother raises her two teenage children with the help of her own mother using educational methods from another era.

The opinion of

As the days go by is the typical example of a series whose trailer and synopsis do not do it justice. At first glance it looks like a sitcom like we have seen others, with a recycled format with jokes formatted. But it’s nothing.

On the contrary, as the days go by it turns out to be a unique series with incredibly endearing characters and a refreshing theme. She never uses comedy purely for fun, but instead always uses it to counteract the realism of her leads and the sometimes difficult situations they face.

Few series have managed to combine comedy, honesty and benevolence as well as Au fil des jours. This remake with the incomparable Rita Moreno and the moving Justina Machado will not leave anyone indifferent due to its irresistible humor and its incredibly effective antidepressant side.

Even when he tackles difficult topics, such as post-traumatic stress or homophobia, as the days go by he always manages to illuminate them with a ray of hope and positivity. Too bad it didn’t last more than four seasons (only three are available on Netflix).
