Netflix Gaming: Games will soon be available on the App Store on iOS

Netflix’s game offering has already arrived on Android, but it has been on iOS for a long time. Due to strict App Store policies, the streaming platform giant would make its games available directly on the App Store on iOS.

Implemented a few days ago, Netflix Gaming is available worldwide on Android smartphones. All subscribers of the streaming platform can find the first 5 games in the Netflix app on their Android smartphone or tablet. They can be accessed from the Games tab. However, this is not a cloud gaming offering. This is because the Netflix app redirects users to the Google Play Store to download games.

Netflix has confirmed that its game offering will come to iOS, but has not yet released any further details. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman explained that strict App Store policies prevent Netflix from making its games accessible from within its app. Cloud gaming services like Stadia and GeForce Now violate the store’s usage guidelines by offering access to their app content. The games are not listed individually in the App Store and therefore cannot be verified by Apple.

The success of a possible Netflix cloud game offering on iOS will depend on Apple’s decision

In order for Netflix Gaming to be available on iOS, the streaming platform giant will have to circumvent these restrictions. According to Mark Gurman, Netflix games will be available individually on the App Store. They will still be able to be launched from the Netflix app, but cannot be played or downloaded in the app.

Therefore, this operation is identical to Netflix Gaming on Android at the moment. However, Netflix’s long-term goal is to offer an all-in-one game offering. Therefore, gamers should be able to download and launch games directly from the app. Mark Gurman believes that the next step for Netflix Gaming is cloud gaming. This would not pose any problem on the part of Android, but a solution would have to be found for the iPhone and iPad.

Finally, Mark Gurman concluded that “Apple will have to change its rules or grant an exemption to Netflix. This leaves the greatest success of the Netflix service in the hands of Apple, a long-time partner but also a growing rival. ”
