Netflix toughens stance on account sharing, sends warnings

Account sharing would represent a huge shortfall for Netflix. Estimates released by analysts vary, but some point to as much as $ 9 billion that has fallen into oblivion. Even if this practice is not prohibited – there is a certain vagueness in the conditions of use – it seems that the SVoD giant has finally decided to intervene.

A warning message

A warning message to verify that the users of the accounts are those who are subscribed has been spotted by the site GammaWire : ” Start your own Netflix for free today. If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to continue watching “. The message in question is accompanied by a two-factor authentication procedure by Email or SMS.

A Netflix spokesperson confirmed the information to The Verge : ” This test is designed to ensure that users of Netflix accounts are allowed to do so.“.

However, we remember that Reed Hastings, the co-founder and director of Netflix, endorsed this practice, explaining in 2016: “There are so many legitimate shares of passwords, like the ones you share with your spouse, with your children, that there is no clear dividing line, and we are doing just fine.“.
