Last Friday, Facebook and Instagram users again had difficulty logging into their accounts.
The social media giant apologized again, after a giant blackout had already occurred earlier this week.
A minor failure
On Twitter, the two companies promised to restore the situation as soon as possible.
“We are aware that some people have difficulties accessing our applications and products. We are trying to rectify the situation as quickly as possible and we apologize for the inconvenience caused, ”the Facebook tweet reads. The message is similar to the one published on Monday, October 4, when Facebook applications and services faced a six-hour outage.
Instagram posted the same type of post about Friday’s troubles.
Nonetheless, the issues that plagued Facebook and Instagram last Friday appeared to be minimal, and their resolution came around 11 p.m. PT.
But these problems come days after the six-hour blackout on Monday, October 4, which interrupted and paralyzed the communication of millions of users around the world. The social media giant had to apologize for the problems that particularly affected the Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms.
Santosh Janardhan of Facebook described what happened in a blog post this week. There, he explains that configuration changes to the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between Facebook’s data centers caused problems that disrupted communication. These issues also hampered Facebook employees’ efforts to communicate with each other and quickly fix the issue.
“To all the people and companies around the world who depend on us, we regret the inconvenience caused by today’s disruption to our platforms. We have worked as hard as possible to restore access, and our systems are now working again, ”he says. “The underlying cause of this failure also affected many of the internal tools and systems that we use in our day-to-day operations, making it difficult for us to quickly diagnose and resolve the problem. “
Hard week for Facebook
When the blackout occurred, the social media giant quickly denied rumors that it was facing a cyber attack. At the same time, it reassures its users about the risk of their data being compromised.
These outages came after Facebook was already going through a rough week. The congressional testimony of whistleblower Frances Haugen, a former employee, tarnishes the social media giant’s image.
In fact, the latter accuses the company of being fully aware of having a harmful effect on its younger users, and in particular on adolescent girls.
