New night of tensions in Guadeloupe, 38 new arrests – Sciences et Avenir

The night from Saturday to Sunday was agitated in Guadeloupe, which has been facing a large-scale social movement for a week, between fires and looting that caused 38 arrests during the night and left two injured among the security forces.

“Once again, the police and the gendarmerie, but also the firefighters who intervened in the fires, were subjected to several shots of firearms,” denounced the prefecture of Guadalupe in a statement that lists the assessment of the urban violence that occurred during the night. .

“The intention to take over the property by breaking and entering is no longer the only motivation for these organized gangs that are now seeking chaos,” said the same source.

“Our area was marked by the looting of shops, especially in the city of Lamentin, where a small shopping center was attacked with a backhoe,” AFP had learned that same day from the Guadeloupe Gendarmerie command.

Government spokesman Gabriel Attal denounced on Sunday morning an “intolerable and unacceptable” situation in Guadeloupe, where defiance of the obligation to vaccinate caregivers degenerates into blockades and violence.

According to Attal, reinforcements of police and gendarmes sent from metropolitan France, in particular units of the GIGN and the Raid, should arrive on Sunday on the island.

Food stores as well as pharmacies were looted in several towns on the island. “On each occasion, a barricade placed upstream prevented us from moving forward,” according to the gendarmes, who also testify to suspicions of “false calls to lure us elsewhere, as did the firefighters.” In the town of Morne-à-l’Eau, a police station caught fire.

According to the prefecture, four pharmacies were fractured.

“The Côte-sous-le-vent was a particularly active point,” added the Guadeloupe Gendarmerie command, which reports roadblocks of all sizes in this area of the island, which is generally quite quiet.

A staff of about 200 people was distributed in the central area of the island, to face the “very numerous” dams burning throughout the night, but also ambushes.

“There were shots aimed at the intervention forces, especially during the attempted attack on the municipal police in Gosier,” a security source commented. In all, the police fired more than 150 tear gas and security grenades.

Guadeloupe, plagued by roadblocks and riots for several days, is under a curfew that runs through Tuesday morning from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.

As of Sunday morning, roadblocks were still listed at various points on the island.
