A lobby group for Canada’s newspapers and magazines is calling on MPs to pass new rules to allow its members to negotiate fair compensation with social media giants who post their content.
News Media Canada wants the government to let the industry bargain collectively with companies like Google and Facebook.
The group’s chief executive, John Hinds, said federal rules in this regard would avoid resorting to new taxes or spending programs.
The group made its point of view on Friday before the House of Commons Canadian Heritage Committee as part of a study of the challenges the pandemic has created for media groups in particular.
Mr. Hinds pointed out that some newspapers have been shut down permanently due to the pandemic and falling advertising revenues.
He added that the future would be bleak for many of its member organizations without adequate federal support.
