Nintendo’s new OLED Switch launched on Friday, and its Joy-Con controllers may have apparently not changed in appearance. Which could make us fear that they still suffer from the same drift problem, the infamous Joy-Con Drift. Remember that since its launch in March 2017, some players have noticed phantom movements on the joysticks. A signal is sent to the console without any commands being executed, making it almost impossible to use.
But this problem could be minimized on newer switches, including the base model, Lite, and OLED. In a question and answer session posted on the company’s website, Nintendo said it had made adjustments to the mechanical parts of its Joy-Con.
“We have studied the Joy-Con controllers used by customers and have repeatedly improved wear resistance and durability,” said Toru Yamashita, Nintendo’s deputy general manager of technology development.
“You can’t buy Joy-Con analog controller parts simply because they are specially designed, so we’ve done a lot of thinking to improve them. In addition, we have improved the reliability test itself and have continued to make changes to improve durability and pass this new test. “
A difficult problem to eliminate
However, the general manager of technology development, Ko Shiota, admitted that it was unlikely that the problem would be eliminated completely, as parts wear out over time.
“For example, car tires wear out as the car moves because they are in constant friction with the ground to turn,” he said. “So, with that same premise, we asked ourselves how to improve durability, but also how to make operability and durability coexist. This is a question we constantly think about. “
The new Nintendo Swith brings some improvements compared to the 2019 model. The screen becomes OLED and goes from a diagonal of 6.2 to 7 inches. The rest of the definition remains at 720p. A wider kickstand appears, as well as more powerful speakers, doubled storage space (64GB), and the base takes advantage of an Ethernet port. The autonomy announced by the manufacturer is from 4.5 hours to 9 hours depending on the use.
With the OLED Switch and its seemingly improved Joy-Cons only released on Friday, it’s too early to say how prevalent the drift problem will be on updated models.
