Nintendo warns of server overload for Switch and Switch OLED: what to do

The Nintendo Switch OLED, along with the standard Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch Lite, are sure to be popular gifts this Christmas. But Nintendo is warning users now to prepare as servers will be overloaded this holiday weekend.

In a tweet posted by the Nintendo of Japan customer service Twitter account, as noted by IGN, it warns users that due to the high concentration of servers, creating new Nintendo accounts could be difficult. Specifically, when setting one up, it may take some time to fully create it. Nintendo asks users, probably parents who have bought a Switch for their children, to create an account now to make sure everything goes smoothly on Christmas Day.

How to prepare your Nintendo Switch for Christmas

Video game consoles that have server issues on Christmas Day aren’t new. Be it PlayStation or Xbox, a massive influx of new users on a day when everyone is out of work and school will invariably cause problems.

For anyone who wants to make sure their new Nintendo Switch works perfectly for Christmas, we recommend that everyone open their Switches now. Yes, that may sound contrary to giveaway tradition, but trust us, removing account settings and updates before Christmas will prevent disappointment starting December 25. For anyone having trouble, check out How to Set Up Your Nintendo Switch guide for more information.

When opening the Switch, follow the setup procedure, log into Wi-Fi, and create a Nintendo Account. After that, go to settings and check if there are any updates that need to be done.

If you plan to buy games digitally, do so now and download them all. If you’re giving away physical games, insert each game into the Nintendo Switch, press the + button on that game, and choose “software update.” Sometimes game updates can be very large, which means installing them now will prevent extremely slow download speeds on Christmas Day.

Also, Nintendo’s servers aren’t as advanced as Sony’s and Microsoft’s, so speeds will be comparatively slow. We recommend using an Ethernet connection whenever possible. The OLED Switch has an Ethernet port built into the base, while the Standard Switch does not. For the standard switch, a separate Ethernet adapter is required. We recommend the Ugreen USB 2.0 Ethernet adapter.
