Nkuti Gatwa (Sex Education) to perform first black Doctor Who

Long steeped in tradition, the iconic Doctor Who franchise has become a beacon of inclusivity in recent years (perhaps less of a benchmark for screenwriting quality, but that’s another story…). After Jodie Whittaker, the first female Doctor Who, which ran for three seasons (from seasons 11 to 13), Nkuti Gatwa will appear on the show, thus becoming the very first black Doctor Who (and also the first to be born in outside the UK). The BBC once again promised a “minority” of Doctor Who, so they kept their word. Nkuti Gatwa notably played in the series “Sex Education” or even in “The Last Letter from Your Lover.”

The arrival of Nkuti Gatwa to the cast also comes with a new showrunner, with Russell T Davies replacing Chris Chibnall. Delighted to be chosen for the role, Nkuti Gatwa shared his enthusiastic first impressions: “This role and this series means so much to so many people around the world, including me, and each of my talented predecessors took on this responsibility. privileges with the greatest care.”
