Official: iPhone 14 Pro is much better than iPhone 14

We had a very good feeling that comparing the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro would show the biggest differences in years, and our testing now confirms this.

As you’ll see in our iPhone 14 review, as well as our iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max reviews, these are all very good phones – they all deserve a place on our list of the best phones.

But that doesn’t mean the regular iPhone 14 is right for you. In fact, if I was spending my own money, I would definitely save up for an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max. That’s why.

Where the iPhone 14 Pro beats the iPhone 14

Always-on display

The ProMotion display of the iPhone 14 Pro series can scale down to 1Hz to provide an always-on display. So you can see the time, battery status, notifications, and iOS 16 lock screen widgets in a low power state.

I didn’t think I would enjoy this feature as much as I do now. Even just in the morning you can see the time without turning on the phone, it’s very convenient. Alas, the regular iPhone 14 does not have this feature, probably because it lacks dynamically updating screens, as in the iPhone 14 Pro models. The iPhone 14, like its predecessor, is locked at 60Hz.

Dynamic Island is great (and will be even better)

Apple has replaced the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro with the name Dynamic Island, and it’s an apt name considering everything this part of the display is capable of. This pill-shaped area changes shape as it displays everything from music playback status and timers to your next direction in Apple Maps. You can also display two so-called Live Activities at once.

But Dynamic Island will get even better once developers can take advantage of this new feature. For example, you can instantly check your favorite team’s score or see the status of your Lyft ride—without having to log into the app itself. This is potentially a real time saver.

48 megapixel camera and optical zoom

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max feature a new 48MP camera that groups images into four pixels for the best results in all lighting conditions. Or you can shoot in true 48MP ProRAW mode for the highest possible resolution, though you’ll need to enable this feature in the settings.

The iPhone 14 Pro series also added 2x zoom capability in addition to 3x optical zoom with a maximum digital zoom of 15x. The iPhone 14 still uses 5x digital zoom without a telephoto lens. It’s a little crazy when you can get a Galaxy S22 with 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom for the same price as a new regular iPhone.

Reasons to get an iPhone 14

The iPhone 14 certainly has something, and these are the main advantages.

Lower price

The iPhone 14 starts at $799, while the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max start at $999 and $1,099 respectively. So the price difference is at least $200. If you prefer more storage, you can get the 256GB iPhone 14 for $899, which is $100 less than the 128GB iPhone 14 Pro.

No matter which model you end up choosing, there are plenty of good iPhone 14 deals for all models.

iPhone 14 cameras are still good (including action mode)

While the iPhone 14 doesn’t bump the resolution to 48MP, its 12MP wide, telephoto, and TrueDepth sensors are solid enough to place this phone on our list of the best camera phones.

Just check out this Galaxy S22 comparison. Diploidia flowers look much sharper through the iPhone, complete with water droplets on the petals.

Which iPhone to buy?

I’m telling you that the iPhone 14 is good. But I also advise you to skip it and get an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max this year if you can afford those models. The 120Hz ProMotion display and 3x telephoto lens were already good reasons to upgrade to the Pro last year, and the new Pros take Apple’s premium flagships to the next level.

With the always-on display, Dynamic Island, and a more powerful camera system, I think you’ll find the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max far more forward looking than the iPhone 14.
