Among Canadians about to buy a car, 35% are considering an electric, hybrid or plug-in hybrid, while 59% are moving towards a gasoline vehicle, according to a report published by the firm EY. The Canadian figures are lower than the average for the 13 countries surveyed for the study, which is 41% for electric, hybrid or plug-in hybrid cars and 50% for those that run on gasoline. However, what is striking are the reasons to buy an electric, hybrid or plug-in hybrid car. In Canada, in 56% of cases, environmental impact motivates more potential buyers, all age groups combined, a percentage higher than the overall average of 49%. According to EY, this is the first time that environmental reasons feature prominently in all age groups. Among the other reasons for this change, battery life attracts 34% of Canadian respondents, followed closely by subsidies at 32%. On the contrary, 66% of the fears come from the total cost of ownership of the car, 41% of the charging time considered too long and, paradoxically, 36% consider that the battery life is too low.
