According to a study by the English Public Health Agency (PHE), a single dose of Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccine can reduce the transmission of coronavirus by almost half within a single household where the risk of infection is high.

People who are infected with the virus three weeks after receiving a dose of the vaccine are 38-49% less likely to transmit the virus to their family members than those who have not been vaccinated, in a statement from the Department of Health England.
This level of protection, observed around the fourteenth day after vaccination, is the same regardless of the age of the person or family members vaccinated.
“This is fantastic news. We already knew that vaccines save lives, and this most comprehensive real-world study also shows that they reduce transmission of this deadly virus, ”said UK Health Minister Matt Hancock.
The study involved 57,000 people from 24,000 households in which vaccinated individuals tested positive and compared them to nearly one million contacts of unvaccinated people.
Households are considered “high risk” locations in terms of transmission, and “similar results can be seen in places with similar risk of transmission, such as cohabitation and prisons,” notes PHE.
The organization notes that a single dose of the vaccine can also reduce the risk of developing symptoms by 60-65% after four weeks.
Previous PHE research showed that Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines had prevented 10,400 deaths in people over 60 as of the end of March.
The United Kingdom, the worst-hit country in Europe with over 127,000 deaths, has been running a mass vaccination campaign since early December, currently using the AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines.
Almost 34 million first doses were administered, and a quarter of the adult population, or 13.2 million, received a second dose, according to official figures released on Tuesday.
