OnePlus Buds Z2 offers 38 hours of battery life and ANC for a surprisingly low price

The recently revealed OnePlus Buds Z2 looks like a serious bargain. In fact, they could have the potential to top our list of the best cheap wireless headphones.

The official announcement (via Weibo) of these new well-priced headphones came alongside the OnePlus 9T, a new entry-level flagship phone that will only be available in China and India. International availability of the Z2 Buds has yet to be announced, but the original Z Buds made it to the US and UK, so we can expect OnePlus to do the same this time.

If you’re in China, the Z2 Buds will sell for 499 yuan starting October 19. That’s around $ 77 or £ 56 if you convert the coin directly. Given that the current OnePlus Buds Z costs $ 50 / £ 55, we can perhaps expect a small price increase in line with the improved capabilities of the second-gen Buds Z.

The design remains pretty much the same with its gel tips and straight stems. However, this time you can choose between two colors: black or white. The Buds Z2’s biggest changes are in the form of three microphones per earbud instead of the previous two, and slightly larger 11mm drivers, the same size as the OnePlus Buds Pro, which is pretty good.

As before, the Buds Z2 offer active noise cancellation (ANC), along with a transparency mode for when you need to focus on the outside world. Considering the low price of these buds, the fact that they offer any form of ANC is quite impressive.

The battery life claims are particularly impressive. OnePlus says the Z2 Buds will last 27 hours in total with the charging case and ANC activated, or 38 in total without ANC. That’s almost identical to what the Buds Pro manage, and also to the longevity of our current best selection of wireless earbuds – the Jabra Elite Active 75T.

There will also be Dolby Atmos support on ColorOS phones, which includes Oppo devices and future OnePlus devices. Oppo and OnePlus are currently merging, so OnePlus is talking about compatibility with an operating system that it does not currently design.

The Z2 Buds will also include Bluetooth 5.2 and an IP55 dust / water resistance rating. OnePlus also promises less than 100ms wireless latency, for more responsive sound when watching movies or playing games.

OnePlus may have picked an interesting time to launch a new pair of headphones, as rumors point to Apple revealing the AirPods 3 next week at its next Unleashed event. These new buds are tipped to offer a new shape more like the AirPods Pro, and are possibly ANC and Dolby Atmos compatible just like the OnePlus Buds Z2. However, they are likely to be much more expensive than the Buds Z2, giving the OnePlus a slight edge for users on tighter budgets.
