OpenAI announces the availability of GPT-4, a new version of its language model

Four months after the ChatGPT surge, OpenAI unveiled GPT-4 on Tuesday, March 14, the latest version of the large language model that underpins the conversational robot. “He is more creative than previous models, much less hallucinatory and less biased,” sums up Sam Altham, head of the American startup. At the same time, warning that it remains imperfect and limited.

More accurate, less errors, but not perfect

GPT-4 aims to showcase the promise of generative artificial intelligence, which many see as the next major technological breakthrough. Thus, the new model has significant improvements over previous versions, as evidenced by its ability to score very high on a number of American academic exams in company-administered tests.

But the technological leap will not necessarily be visible to all users, warns OpenAI, because GPT-4 is at its best in the most complex tasks. His exam performance is also already in question, with some suggesting that he is simply inspired by already existing answers.

According to the startup, the new model is much more accurate. It is able to better understand finer instructions and greatly reduce the number of bugs common in previous versions. However, GPT-4 does not fix all the flaws, admits Sam Altman, who has already warned users not to use the model for “important things.”

Multimodal functionality with image analysis

The GPT-4 also stands out for its ability to analyze images and then describe them very accurately. This novelty, which distinguishes it from its main competitors, is still in the experimental stage. In particular, it is being tested by the Be My Eyes startup, which is developing an application for blind or visually impaired people.

Barely announced, GPT-4 is already integrated into ChatGPT, but only for subscribers to the $20/month paid offer. However, the number of requests offered per day is limited. OpenAI has not yet indicated when the new model will be available to everyone. GPT-4 is also the model behind the new version of Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, from the beginning.

GPT-4 is also available through the OpenAI API, allowing companies to use it to develop their own applications. Several partner companies are already working on new services. Others will have to register on a waiting list before they can enjoy it.
